It’s no secret that Deadpool & Wolverine has been one of the biggest hits of the year. While it didn’t blow critics away, fans loved it, and the impressive box office numbers speak for themselves. In fact, it’s the highest-grossing film of the year, second only to Inside Out 2.

Though the movie dominated headlines a few months ago, attention has since shifted to other topics. However, we’re excited to revisit Deadpool & Wolverine in this report.

Recently, visual development artist Rodney Fuentebella, who worked on the film, revealed that an alternate ending was planned. This version would have featured the return of two iconic pre-MCU Marvel characters, as shown in concept art he shared on his Instagram.

This recent reveal comes just ahead of the release of The Art of Deadpool & Wolverine, a book that will showcase a wealth of concept art and behind-the-scenes ideas from the film.

Fuentebella’s sketches offer a glimpse into an alternate ending where Deadpool and Wolverine face off against the Deadpool Corps in the Void, with some unexpected assistance. Here’s the post:

Here is an early concept illustration I did for the @marvelstudios Deadpool and Wolverine film. This was in the beginning stages of the making of the film so a lot changed but I wanted to show the how epic and awesome this film could be at the time.

I had a blast creating all the interactions between our heroes and the Deadpool variants. Thank you to @andyparkart for leading this project on the vis dev side and to all the Marvel Studios peps. Check out @ryan_meinerding_art Wolverine concept if you haven’t already. And enjoy!!!

As the images reveal, Deadpool and Wolverine were originally set to receive help from Ben Affleck’s Daredevil and Nicolas Cage’s Ghost Rider—two fan-favorite characters who didn’t make the final cut (we’ve previously covered why Affleck wasn’t included).

Fans would have loved to see these two on-screen, alongside familiar faces like the Human Torch (Chris Evans), Blade (Wesley Snipes), and Elektra (Jennifer Garner), who did appear in the film.

This exciting glimpse suggests the possibility of Affleck and Cage returning in a future MCU project, something fans are eagerly hoping for. Fingers crossed!
