We’ve lost count of how many times we wrote about DCEU ending and DCU kicking off to replace it soon. We are all very familiar with the situation, and right now, we can only wait to see what DCU has in store for us once DCEU releases the last two movies on its slate; ‘Blue Beetle,’ which is only a few days away, and ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,’ which will be released this December. In 2024, we can expect an Elseworlds movie ‘Joker: Folie à Deux.’ But, before DCU kicks off with ‘Superman: Legacy’ in 2025, the first of many projects that Gunn announced earlier this year, ‘Creature Commandos,’ will also premiere in 2024.

The upcoming animated series will depict the homonymous team of superhumans, which first appeared in the source material in ‘Weird War Tales’ #93, by J. M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, in November 1980. The team consists of a human team leader, a werewolf, a vampire, a gorgon, and Frankenstein’s monster.

In the source material, this team was created as a result of Project M, which assembled the team to fight against the Axis powers during World War II. However, even though they were initially active during that time, the team continued to exist in the modern era, and the series’ writer James Gunn now confirmed during which time the series takes place.

The writer of ‘Creature Commandos’ confirms when the series takes place!

Being the co-CEO of DC Studios, many DC fans called James Gunn “DC’s Kevin Feige,” which is correct to some extent, but not entirely. Unlike Feige, Gunn is still actively involved in the development of certain projects since he serves as the writer and director of ‘Superman: Legacy’ and the sole writer of ‘Creature Commandos.’

David Harbour Talks About His Role in DC’s ‘Creature Commandos’

The previously revealed description of ‘Creature Commandos’ announced that the series will depict Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller as she assembles a black ops team of monsters called the Creature Commandos for a dangerous mission. Due to Amanda Waller’s involvement in the series, it was presumed that the series would take place in the present day, and James Gunn recently confirmed it while answering a fan question on X (formerly known as Twitter) recently.

While the plot sounds awfully similar to Suicide Squad, only with a different team, it’s going to be interesting to see what Gunn prepared for us here. The series star David Harbour, who is voicing Eric Frankenstein, recently teased that the series is hilarious and that he can’t wait for the people to see it. It seems like we can expect an animated series with a lot of violence and adult humor, and after watching Gunn’s work on ‘The Suicide Squad’ and ‘Peacemaker,’ we are definitely up for it.

‘Creature Commandos’ will consist of seven episodes, all written by James Gunn. It stars Frank Grillo, Maria Bakalova, Indira Varma, Zoë Chao, Alan Tudyk, David Harbour, Sean Gunn, and Steve Agee. The series will premiere on the Max streaming service in 2024.
