‘The Penguin’ is the latest installment in Matt Reeves’ Batman Epic Crime Saga. The show follows Oswald Cobb played by Collin Farrell reprising his role from ‘Batman: Part I.’ So far the show is a massive success both when it comes to critics and audiences, it’s topping viewership charts for the sixth week in a row now, and this trend is expected to continue for the remainder of the show.

While the critics are praising Farrell’s portrayal of a notable Batman villain, one surprising hit was Christin Milioti’s portrayal of Sofia Falcone.

Sofia Falcone starts out with clear enough motivations. She is dubbed ‘The Hangman’ and we know that she has spent 10 years in Arkham Asylum due to her “serial killer” tendencies. As the show progresses we realize that she has been set up by her father and Oz. The real culprit behind the murders was Carmine himself, and he covered it up by locking away the only person who dared suspect him – Sofia.

Sofia returns from Arkham Asylum mentally unstable, things are further worsened by the fact that Alberto Falcone died in the first episode – by Penguin himself. As the plot unravels Sofia realizes who her true enemy is, and she seizes the entire Falcone family in a quiet coup that leaves most of her family dead.

Sofia currently runs under the name Gigante, deciding to honor her mother’s side of the family.

Cristin Milioti recently sat down with THR and commented on her favorite scenes from the show. She admits she finds watching herself on screen “excruciating,” a feeling many actors share.

However, she notes that there are scenes she loved performing that came across on screen just as she hoped, which is rare and doesn’t always happen.

Milioti’s first favorite scene is from episode four, where Sofia shares a “last supper” with her family, though they’re unaware of what’s about to happen.

I would say the speech at dinner with my family, and the ensuing aftermath. That whole sequence from the minute I entered the dining room to the very end of the episode was very, very thrilling.

Milioti’s second favorite scene is from episode seven, where Sofia confronts a young girl—the only witness to her family’s crimes—in an orphanage. She threatens the girl to keep silent but then realizes she’s behaving just like her father, whom she despises.

I remember reading that scene and being like, ‘holy moly,’ it’s such a brutal scene. But I was so excited about it and so moved by it; it’s so complicated. But of course, this is what this person would do. What’s beautiful about that scene, too, is she’s quite literally trying to burn her father’s legacy to the ground and saying, ‘I’m nothing like him, he’s a monster,’ and she does the exact same thing to this little girl.

She sentences her to the exact same life, in a way, but she truly is believing that she’s doing that child a service. In her mind, she’s doing the right thing — ‘I’m saving you from something you don’t know about’ — while ruining this child’s life.

You can argue that ever since Sofia killed her entire family, it was always kind of obvious she would end up exactly the same as her father. But in any case, it’s interesting to watch Sofia on screen as she comes to the conclusion herself. What do you think about her favorite scenes, what are yours? Let us know in the comments below!
