A new Rey-focused Star Wars movie was announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023. Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the film follows Rey’s journey to rebuild the Jedi Order after ‘The Rise of Skywalker.’
Originally written by Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, the script was later taken over by Steven Knight, and the recent news is that Knight has left the production.
The story is set 15 years after ‘Rise of Skywalker,’ exploring the post-war, post-First Order galaxy with the Jedi in disarray. Kathleen Kennedy mentioned that Rey is working to fulfill her promise to Luke and rebuild the Jedi Order, based on the ancient books.
So far, it’s been unknown whether that standalone movie will lead to a new trilogy, but some recent reports are certainly leaning in that direction. A new trilogy of Star Wars movies is in the making. Deadline reports that these films could be episodes 10-12 of the Skywalker Saga, which began with George Lucas’s original Star Wars movie in 1977. That film, along with Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, helped transform blockbuster movies forever.
Lucasfilm has made a deal with Simon Kinberg, who has worked with them before. He co-created the Emmy-nominated animated series ‘Star Wars Rebels’ with Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck, which aired from 2014 to 2018. Kinberg also helped with ‘Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens,’ the 2015 movie that brought the franchise back under director JJ Abrams.
If you’ve read our past reports based on this piece of news, you are likely aware that fans reacted negatively to both the fact that Kinberg is involved and to the fact that those upcoming movies are reportedly set to continue Rey’s story.
According to insiders who spoke to THR recently, Rey is still the most valuable asset that the franchise currently has and the only way forward.
Lucasfilm accepted Simon Kinberg’s multi-story idea as a way to keep Rey’s character moving forward. This has led to rumors among fans that different filmmakers are competing for control over key characters like Rey. Daisy Ridley however mentioned in the past that she’s excited to return to a character she knows well but in a new phase.
Insiders deny that there’s an actual “battle” over Rey, but there are discussions within Lucasfilm about her future. One source said that Rey is the studio’s most valuable character for the big screen. While her role is expected in several upcoming movies, the exact projects aren’t yet confirmed.
She is the most valuable cinematic asset, in some ways maybe the only one, Star Wars has right now.

The same sources claim Rey will appear in several upcoming Star Wars movies, though the specific projects are still uncertain.
Star Wars movie development has faced criticism, especially with Kathleen Kennedy being blamed for not creating strong new characters since Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012.
Many classic characters like Luke, Leia, and Han are either dead or their stories are finished. Rey, created after George Lucas left, is now the only character still important for the big screen.
The new characters and stories that they tried to create almost all failed due to different reasons, the most recent example being ‘The Acolyte’ which failed spectacularly through trying to emulate Anakin’s story with new modern twists. The insider described the current state of Star Wars as “running out of ways to create nostalgia”
You’re being asked to create the new New Testament. And no one can agree on anything and there’s a lot of second guessing about meanings. […]Star Wars is a nostalgia-based enterprise and they are running out of ways to create nostalgia.
