‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Confirms 7-Year Time Jump from Netflix Show
Showrunner Dario Scardapane recently commented on how Daredevil: Born Again connects to the Netflix series. He explained that the new show moves the story forward by seven years.
“It was absolutely Job 1, the idea being… we were all huge fans of the old show, it set the template. But what we wanted to do is take all of what happened to these characters and push it forward seven years. Everybody’s older and should be wiser, and maybe some people are, maybe they’re not, and we wanted to take the world and keep it moving and go the next step.”
Scardapane also talked about the differences between working with Marvel Studios compared to the now-defunct Marvel Television. He said the new show has “more resources” and “a bigger pallet” to tell the story in a fresh and exciting way.
“So it was very calculated, both in terms of the look, in terms of the storytelling, in terms of the characters for this to be a continuance plus, to use the Marvel term. We now have the ability to tell stories a little differently than then, we have more resources, we have a bigger pallet, and it was the idea of taking that and pushing it forward seven years. And, as you know, by the first two episodes, the central dilemma and conflict is much larger now.”
Since Daredevil Season 3 was released in 2018 and Daredevil: Born Again premiered in March 2025, the time jump matches up with real-world time.
What’s interesting is that just a few months ago, Bethel made a statement that directly clashes with what Scardapane has told us.
Bethel said there’s a pretty big time jump between the original Netflix show and ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ but described it as being 5 years not seven.
Yeah, I mean, Charlie sort of alluded to it. But I think one of the things that’s interesting is, I mean, maybe it’s different on a sitcom or something like that, but if you’re on a show for over a period of time and the characters are aging together sort of in real-time, and if the show is well written and the writers are sort of responding to that reality transpiring, the wrinkles of their hair, et cetera, then in theory, the character is evolving in a way, whether or not the show was on air.
So there’s kind of like this funny thing stepping back after five years where Born Again will pick up with that amount of time having transpired. The show doesn’t pick up the day after we last saw it. It picks up five years later.
And so in theory, these are characters who have all lived five years of life and all of the twists and turns that you take in the meantime. So whether or not even those stories are necessarily on screen, there’s just that little extra bit of life in there, which I think is… as an actor, it gives you an opportunity to bring whatever your own journey has been in that time and they get sort of a little longer in the tooth.
Marvel Studios decided to officially make the Defenders Saga part of the MCU in 2023 and 2024. This was a big relief for fans, especially after seeing characters like Daredevil and Kingpin appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Hawkeye, and Echo.
Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios exec also hinted that some Defenders will slowly come back to the screen but did not reveal the details.
