‘Daredevil’ Is Bringing Back the Hero’s Most Controversial Costume in April
Marvel loves to shake things up when it comes to superhero costumes, and one of its most debated designs is returning to the spotlight. Back in 1993, Daredevil stepped out in a black armored suit that divided opinions.
This look, first introduced in Daredevil #321 during the Fall From Grace storyline, stirred controversy for its drastic departure from his usual red suit. Over time, though, the design gained more appreciation, especially as the ’90s have seen a nostalgic resurgence.
Now, this iconic suit is making another appearance—but not in a flashback or short-lived story.
Starting with Daredevil #20 this April, written by Saladin Ahmed and featuring art by José Luis Soares, the black armor will take center stage in the main Daredevil series. The issue also promises action as Matt Murdock faces off against a new villain and reconnects with a former love interest.
The cover by John Romita Jr. will headline the issue, with a special variant by Philip Tan showing off the updated suit.
The black armor had a bit of a revival in 2023 when Marvel launched the Daredevil: Black Armor miniseries. That project brought back D.G. Chichester, who originally penned the suit’s debut story.
Chichester expressed his excitement about revisiting this chapter of Daredevil’s history, describing it as an unexpected but rewarding opportunity. He also praised the creative freedom Marvel gave him to dive back into the intense action and heightened senses that define the character.
With this new chapter set in the present day, it’ll be interesting to see how readers feel about the return of the black armor. Nostalgia for ’90s comics has brought back several popular trends, and this suit could be the next to win over longtime and new readers alike. Keep an eye out for Daredevil #20 when it hits shelves on April 9.
