DC Studios Announces Animated Robins’ Origin Film in Development – ‘Dynamic Duo’

DC Studios has numerous projects in development. Gunn is trying to build up a new cinematic universe from scratch – DCU, which technically starts with the release of ‘Creature Commandos,’ but its true taste comes with the release of ‘Superman’ in 2025.

Matt Reeves is on the side, expanding his Batman Epic Crime Saga. Reeves’ universe is currently off to a great start, especially with the release of ‘The Penguin’ which has seen overwhelmingly positive critical and audience reception.

It seems however that Gunn and Reeves will also join forces in developing a new animated movie that will focus on Robin’s origin story. DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation have officially greenlit an exciting new project titled ‘Dynamic Duo.’

This will be the first collaboration between DC Studios and WBPA, led by Bill Damaschke. The film, written by Matthew Aldrich, is being produced by a new animation studio called Swaybox, based in New Orleans and founded by husband-and-wife team Arthur Mintz and Theresa Andersson.

Mintz will direct the movie, which focuses on the early days of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, also known as the Robins.

The movie will be produced by Reeves and Gunn although it’s apparently not connected to their DC universes.

Swaybox will employ a technology called “Momo animation,” which combines CGI animation with practical stop-motion elements and live-action real-time performance, including puppetry. This innovative approach aims to create visually stunning, dynamically expressive, and more human long-form storytelling. Reeves had nothing but excitement for the project:

I have wanted to make a film with Arthur and Swaybox for many years, and for that film to be Dynamic Duo, an incredibly special and unique Batman and Robin story for families, is a dream.
