James Gunn and Peter Safran face a formidable challenge as they take on a new era in the DC Universe (DCU). Following a tumultuous period, the DCU is slated for another significant revamp with the unveiling of a fresh roster of movies and television shows. The announcement that James Gunn and Peter Safran would be leading the way in this new chapter in the DCU came out last year, and since then, further information about the projects they are actively working on has been disclosed to the public. Among the movies announced are standalone movies following well-known characters in the universe and some lesser-known ones. One of the freshly announced movies follows a team of superheroes called Authority, and we’re going to use this opportunity to tell you all about its potential release date, cast, plot, and everything you need to know about really.

The Authority is an upcoming DCU live-action movie based on the WildStorm team of superheroes called the Authority, which specializes in solving crises through morally ambiguous means. So far, the cast of the upcoming movie is unknown. The release date hasn’t been announced as well, but we do know that it’s going to be a major project focused on introducing new characters to the revamped DCU.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, it’s time to analyze the superhero team and the technical aspects of the upcoming movie in a bit more detail. If you’re interested in more, stay with us and keep reading!

Who are The Authority, DCU’s new superhero team

The Authority is a superhero team created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch. The team mainly consists of members that belonged to Stormwatch, another similar team created by Ellis as well. The Authority was first published under the WildStorm imprint, which was acquired by the DC. The team was founded by Jenny Sparks, who served as its leader for a time. She has unique electrokinetic abilities and managed to gather around her a rooster of classic superheroes in an effort to fight dangers and deal with the rising crises.

The team’s original rooster included characters such as Jack Hawksmoor, the so-called “God of cities,” Swift, a Tibetan woman gifted with wings and talons, Apollo, that served as an imitation of Superman; Midnighter, an imitation of Batman; the Engineer scientist that replaced her own blood with nanotechnology and The Doctor that gained shamanistic powers under bizarre circumstances.

As you can see, the team’s roster is quite bizarre, and their way of dealing with problems is unique and certainly a new approach to things, at least when DC is concerned. James Gunn commented that the movie would be huge, and he is personally invested in the movie as it can be considered to be his passion project.

The Authority’s a very different kind of superhero story. They are basically good-intentioned, but they think that the world is completely broken and the only way to fix it is to take things into their own hands, whether that means killing people, destroying heads of state, changing governments—basically, whatever they want to do to make the world better. We’ll see how that journey goes for them.”

DCU The Authority: Plot details

The exact plot of the movie is so far unknown, but based on the team’s comic history, we can expect to see a bunch of morally grey characters taking matters into their own hands. They are not above using excessive violence and causing great collateral damage to achieve their goal. They are completely independent, meaning that there are no politicians or organizations to whom they answer to. This makes them impartial, cold-blooded, and destructive but efficient in their own way. Looking through the lenses of the Justice League, we can expect the Authority to take a completely different approach to “dealing with things.”

There’s plenty of material to adapt to live-action, so it’s hard to guess what exactly the story will involve. What we do know is that we can look forward to a plethora of exciting characters that will breathe new life into the DCU.

The Authority: Cast members

Not much is known about the cast of The Authority or the new DCU phase in general. The Authority will introduce a plethora of new characters, which means plenty of new addition to the DCU roster. So far, the only cast member of the DCU “Gods and Monsters” phase is Viola Davis, that is set to return to her role of Amanda Waller in the upcoming series.

The Authority: Potential release date

So far, only two projects have concrete release dates, and The Authority is not among them. Superman: Legacy is scheduled to be released on July 11, 2025, and The Batman – Part II (Elseworlds) is scheduled to be released on October 3, 2025. It’s unclear whether the movie Authority will be released between the movies or it will be released further down the line. Gunn commented on the current state of the movie.

“This is one of my real passion projects. I’ve been working really hard on it with the writers, and we’re starting to put together the entire story. This is a big movie.”

With everything said, it’s clear we can expect exciting things to come in the upcoming fresh new chapter of the DCU. The Authority will introduce a plethora of intriguing and somewhat morally grey characters to the rooster of the well-known and iconic characters that have been gracing the pages of DC comics for decades. DCU’s Gods and Monsters is going to be kicked off with the upcoming animated series called Creature Commandos. However, the release date hasn’t been discussed yet.
