DCU’s ‘Blue Beetle’ Star Reportedly Cast in MCU’s ‘Nova’ Series

Marvel Studios currently has over numerous projects in development, spotlighting both major and lesser-known characters from the comics. This comes despite Disney CEO Bob Iger’s statement that the studio would scale back its output to 2-3 movies per year and 2 live-action series.

One long-awaited project is ‘Nova,’ which has been in development for several years. Initially conceived as a series, it was later reimagined as a feature film but now appears to have returned to its original format as a series.

Recently, Brad Winderbaum head of animation for Marvel Studios cleared doubts on whether the show is in development at all, he stated that ‘Nova’ development is planned, but due to a new system in place, just because the project is in development, that doesn’t mean that the show will be released.

If the latest rumors are to be believed, the show is on a good track to be released since Productionlist now reports that Xolo Maridueña and Tanner Gillman have been cast in the show.

Xolo Maridueña’s most notable role is that of Blue Beetle. ‘Blue Beetle’ was released last year as one of the final DCEU’s projects. Despite being a solid origin story, the movie was not as successful with the audiences and box office as we had hoped.

Still, several months ago it was confirmed that Maridueña’s Blue Beetle would be crossing over to the DCU in the form of an animated series.

Tanner Gillman is best known for his work on the sketch comedy show ‘Studio C,’ where he gained recognition for his comedic roles. He also starred in the independent films ‘Once I Was Engaged’ and ‘Once I Was a Beehive,’ portraying Thys, a wealthy love interest whose unexpected marriage proposal disrupts the plans of the lead character. Additionally, he appeared in ‘Not Cinderella’s Type’ and the series ‘Green Gables Fables.’

Now this hasn’t been confirmed by reports and it’s solely our speculation but if Maridueña was truly cast in the show, it’s likely that he has been cast as Sam Alexander. In recent few months, there’s been a lot of speculation about which version of the character the show might follow, and based on some rumors it’s likely that the MCU will want to focus on Sam Alexander.

Productionlist also provided us with an alleged synopsis of the project:

In the wake of Annihilation, Nova the Human Rocket stands on the front lines of cosmic adventure as the last of the Nova Corps and our only hope against threats from the furthest reaches of the Marvel Universe

Sabir Pirzada will reportedly serve as the writer with Kevin Feige being listed as producer. Glenn Close who played Nova Prime in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ will reprise her role along with John C. Reilly who portrays Rhomann Dey, a member of Nova Corps.
