Starship Troopers (1997), directed by Paul Verhoeven, is a sci-fi movie about Earth fighting a war against giant alien bugs. The film uses extreme violence and nudity to satirize military propaganda, fascism, and nationalism.

Although it received mixed reviews when it first came out, it has since become a cult classic and is seen as a sharp commentary on war and society.

The cast includes Casper Van Dien as Johnny Rico, a star athlete turned soldier, Dina Meyer as Dizzy Flores, Rico’s fellow infantryman, Denise Richards as Carmen, Jake Busey as Ace Levy, Neil Patrick Harris as Carl Jenkins, Clancy Brown as Sergeant Zim, and Michael Ironside as Jean Rasczak, a teacher-turned-squad leader.

Denise Richards played Carmen, an aspiring starship pilot and Johnny Rico’s girlfriend in Starship Troopers. Despite the movie’s focus on gender equality, Richards was asked to do a topless scene, which she quickly turned down. In the film, Carmen and Johnny grow apart as he becomes a soldier and she joins the space force.

The movie, known for its violence and nudity, includes a co-ed shower scene to show soldier camaraderie. In a 2018 interview, Richards revealed that director Paul Verhoeven had written a topless scene for her, but she refused because it felt unnecessary.

Paul added a topless scene that wasn’t in the original script but I refused to do it – I didn’t see the point of it.

The director, Paul Verhoeven, didn’t insist on the scene, and it seems Richards wasn’t offended by the request or held any hard feelings toward him. She also expressed her appreciation for the character of Carmen, saying that fans value her as a strong woman. Richards believes that Carmen’s romantic relationships are not a major concern, as everyone experiences love and breakups in their youth. Ultimately, she sees Carmen as a badass and a great role model.

I love my character, and the fans seem to appreciate she’s a strong woman. If there were negative audience reactions to her swapping between two men, I didn’t hear about it. At some point or other, everyone gets dumped and does the dumping – that’s young love! But for the most part I think she’s a badass, a great role model.
