For many fans, Deadpool & Wolverine was the most anticipated film of the year. The movie, featuring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, is still in theaters and has certainly met audience expectations. As you know, the film is packed with Easter Eggs, with many Marvel references hidden within the jokes—most of which are delivered by Deadpool himself.
Given Deadpool’s love for breaking the fourth wall, many of these jokes were meta in nature, often poking fun at Kevin Feige and Disney. This added a great layer of humor to the film, but some fans now feel that Disney may have taken things too far.
Capitalizing on the film’s popularity, Disney recently incorporated Deadpool into its theme park attractions. In a recent performance of “Storytime with Deadpool,” however, a particular joke was made that some fans found offensive.
During a recent “Storytime with Deadpool” event at a Disney Park, a performer in a Deadpool costume made the following joke: “Cinderpool was late [to the big battle] because he had to read every single page in the terms and conditions when he signed up for Disney+.” While this is a typical Deadpool-style joke and something that could have appeared in the movie, it struck a nerve given recent events.
Not long ago, a woman named Kanokporn Tangsuan tragically passed away at a Disney Park after suffering an allergic reaction to a meal. Her husband quickly filed a lawsuit against Disney, but the suit was temporarily blocked because the couple had agreed to Disney+’s terms and conditions back in 2019, which included a clause stating they could not sue Disney.
The situation itself was already controversial—imagine a lawsuit like this being challenged due to a streaming service’s terms of use from years ago—but the joke was seen as an insensitive reference to the incident and did not land well with many fans.
What’s your take? Was the joke harmless, or did it cross a line? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
