Did ‘The Penguin’ Just Kill Off Its Best Character? Here’s What Went Down

Episode 3 of ‘The Penguin’ just dropped and oh my, did things go down. The episode picks up some time after the events of episode 2, with Sofia Falcone really starting to collude with Oz regarding her planned takeover of the Falcone family.

Sofia relies on her deceased brother’s plans to introduce a new drug to the market called “Bliss.” The drug is derived from basidiospores of Bleeding Tooth mushroom and it’s something that Sofia was given while she was at Arkham. This is likely what inspired Alberto to take it to the streets.

Now, Sofia has the name, the power, the money, and the drug. What does Oz have? Why does Sofia need Oz? Well, Oz is the smooth talker and has “connections” all over the city, he is also likely the only person in the city shameless enough to approach people he screwed over to do business with him again.

Sofia however can’t get past one thing from their shared past as the Penguin was obviously the one that ratted her out, and as he himself admits, he doesn’t regret it. He sold her out to both her family and by extension to authorities, in exchange for “moving up in the world.” But the sad thing is, he never exactly “moved up” and didn’t earn the respect he thought he deserved. As Sofia points out isn’t even a “made man.”

In any case, Oz and Sofia are trying to get the Triads in on their drug game, but the Triad boss Mr. Zhao wants a surefire confirmation that the Falcone family (actually Johnny Vitti) is backing their “new deal.”

With some clever maneuvering, The Penguin is able to blackmail Johnny Vitti (he’s sleeping with Luca Falcone’s wife) into endorsing Sofia Falcone’s new business venture. Everything seems to be set up and Oz, his girls, Victor, and Sofia are supposed to push the new drug via the Triad’s nightclub.

But there’s still one thing we’re forgetting, and one thing that seems to slip from Oz’s mind as soon as the new opportunity presents itself. Oz is still supposed to be working with the Maroni family – a deal he made out of desperation.

After securing the deal with the Triads, Sofia and Oz have a heart-to-heart conversation in the back alley. Oz admits that he was the one who ratted Sofia out but claims that she needs to give him the opportunity to trust him again.

Just at that moment, the Maroni squad attacks them. Nadia Maroni confronts Oz, and the whole family is pissed beacuse Oz is supposed to secure Drops for them and he’s not supposed to start pushing a new drug with their shared enemy.

Luckily, Victor, who was supposed to run away from Oz and run away from Gotham with his girlfriend in general, returns to the nightclub after having a change of heart.

He sees Oz and Sofia being held at gunpoint and decides to ram his car into the Maronis. He manages to take down at least one henchman that we see on screen, and saves Oz from safe death.

Victor asks whether they will pick up Sofia as well and Oz tells him to drive away and leave her there with the Maronis. Now we never actually see Sofia dying on-screen, but the chances are great that she was either killed when Victor crashed his car into a group of people or that she will eventually be killed by the rival family.

Why Sofia being held by the Maroni family is bad news for Oz

Sofia being killed by Victor or the Maroni family is actually the best possible scenario for Oz as he has everything to gain from it. The Triads and lab crew that Sofia had, already knows that Oz is associated with her so he would naturally be able to take over the operation with the new drug even in case of her death.

He could also return to the Falcones and tell them that Sofia was killed by the Maronis, which would further fortify his story about their reignited rivalry and the story that Maronis are behind Alberto’s murder. It would also bring him back to good graces with both Luca and Johnny.

Sofia however ending up alive but held by Maronis is the worst possible scenario, as Sofia will likely learn that it was Oz who delivered the Maroni ring back to Salvatore aka he was the one who killed Alberto and set up Maronis.

She would also find out that Oz planned to doublecross the family in order to push his own goals with Maronis.
