Disney+ was supposed to be Disney’s flagship streaming service, able to compete with the likes of Netflix and secure a major piece of streaming audiences via their past released and original content.

However, most recent reports state that the company has overstretched its abilities and finances as the streaming service reportedly incurred over $11.4 Billion in operating losses.

Despite Disney+ having a large subscriber base and viewership, its substantial spending has not been justified. With other streaming services expanding their content and audiences returning to cinemas, Disney+ has seen a significant drop in revenue.

Now the company has several strategies in place to recover at least some of its investments, and one of them is introducing “playlists” or “channels.”

Later this year, Disney+ will launch four new channels: Hallowstream (seasonal content), Hits and Heroes (action stories from Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars), Throwbacks (pop-culture nostalgia), and Real Life (documentaries and biopics). These additions are part of Disney’s effort to increase viewer engagement on the platform. Currently, Disney+ has a similar viewership share to Tubi and significantly less than Netflix and Amazon.

In July 2023, Disney+ and Hulu together accounted for 5.6% of TV viewing, but this dropped to 4.8% by July 2024, while competitors like YouTube, Netflix, Peacock, and Tubi saw growth.

Channels were only recently introduced. The feature focuses on specific shows or themes. Subscribers can either watch a new episode on demand or tune into the channel. Currently, these live channels are available only to ad-free Disney+ Premium subscribers. Disney refers to these features as “playlists” rather than live channels.

Playlists are the latest example of how we’re providing the best value and experience for our subscribers every time they open Disney+. Whether it’s news, kids’ content, popular genres, hit TV shows or blockbuster films, there will be something for everyone in a lean-back viewing experience based on seasonality and interest.

Currently, only two channels are available ABC News Live and Disney Junior with 4 aforementioned coming later this month.
