Well, it’s official. Disney has done the unthinkable and united nearly all of Marvel’s properties under one roof. That’s right. Marking the end of their Mega-Deal, Disney officially acquires Fox. Their acquisition of Fox means that Wolverine, Cyclops, the rest of the X-Men, Human Torch, Dr. Doom and every other character in the Fantastic Four’s world is home with Marvel. This, if it’s not completely apparent, means that every character that should’ve been in the MCU already can finally appear in the MCU.
Although I’m ecstatic about the merger, I’m a little apprehensive about it too. And I’ll tell you why.
Merger
Yes, it’s nice to see Wolverine and company back at home with Marvel. Yes. it’s nice that all the legalities of whether or not characters can appear are gone. And yes, it’s nice to know that Marvel can basically translate any story they want to the big screen without fear of not having a specific character. But all those things might mean that the creativity that Marvel has had to use over the years, may fall to the wayside.
Think about it.
Avengers End Game is the culmination of ten years of movies. The movie brings close to an adaption of one of the most highly regarded comics in history, the Infinity Gauntlet. But it also brings close to dramatically different characters playing parts they shouldn’t be playing.
To bring the Infinity Gauntlet to the screen without the likes of Wolverine, the Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer, Galactus, and the like, was a monumental undertaking. It required creative thinking beyond measure. Do you think it was actually Bruce Banner crashing through the Sanctum Sanctorum in the comics? Not even close. It was the Silver Surfer.
That’s exactly what I refer to.
Without all characters at their disposal, Marvel had to rely on a little creative ingenuity.
I fear, and maybe it’s my paranoia talking, that will the full gambit (no pun intended) of characters at their disposal, Marvel may relax on some of what made them the Hollywood powerhouse they are today. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate it when movies stay true to the comics. I really do. However, I also enjoy a great story. The MCU, for the last 10 years, has told a much different story.
Cheers,
Joel
