Over the last several months we’ve frequently reported on the fact that Disney is losing money on its streaming service, Disney+ that was created to compete with the streaming giant Netflix.
Although a good plan, in theory, it would seem that the company overextended itself incurring over $11.4 billion in operating losses according to a recent Forbes analysis.
This meant that the price hike was inevitable, and the company did announce yesterday that all its tiered plans will be going up in price this fall.
Disney will increase the prices of most streaming plans starting October 17, a year after the last hike in fall 2023. This move follows a trend among media companies to regularly raise streaming prices to achieve profitability in the direct-to-consumer market. The new prices will see Disney+ with ads rise from $7.99 to $9.99 per month, and the ad-free version from $13.99 to $15.99 per month.
Duo Basic (Disney+ and Hulu with ads) rises by $1 to $10.99, while Duo Premium remains at $19.99. Hulu with ads goes up from $7.99 to $9.99 and without ads from $17.99 to $18.99. ESPN+ with ads increases by $1 to $11.99. Hulu + Live TV with ads jumps from $76.99 to $82.99, and without ads from $89.99 to $95.99. The Disney+ bundle (Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+) rises by $2 to $16.99 for basic and $26.99 for premium. To ease the impact, Disney+ will add continuous playlists to its U.S. on-demand offering.
This is the fourth price increase since the service has launched, and the streaming service subscription will soon cost more than double what it cost 5 years ago. The reactions to this were not pretty with plenty of subscribers pointing out that the content library is not worth it:
There’s also the irony in it all that streaming services became successful in the first place as a much more reasonable alternative to Cable TV, and now that pretty much every media company has its streaming service, if you really want to follow all content, you’re basically paying for Cable TV once again.
