During this year’s SDCC it was revealed that Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the MCU, not as Tony Stark aka Iron Man but rather as Victor von Doom, one of Marvel’s most popular villains.
This announcement has been met with mixed reactions largely due to the fans having perhaps better actors in mind for the role and because they were afraid that Iron Man’s legacy would be jeopardized.
We have no idea how Doom will be incorporated into the MCU, and whether we will be dealing with true Doom or a variant. We also don’t know what kind of motivation he has to start interacting with our favorite superheroes. But, if the latest rumors are true, it’s kind of really obvious and Downey himself may have already revealed it back during his SDCC panel.
In any case, MyTimeToShineHello popular industry insider, recently posted to his social media that MCU’s Doom will have the same goal as his comic counterpart in legendary storyline ‘Secret Wars.’
Now in both the 1984 story and in 2015 story Doom essentially wants to save reality by rebuilding it in his own likeness and ruling it as an absolute god Emperor via iron fist. Doom’s motives are noble enough but the way he executes them and ultimately ends up “ruling” the reality is what makes him an incredibly dangerous villain.
We already theorized that MCU will loosely adapt the ‘Time Runs Out ‘ storyline in Doomsday. During this storyline, Doom realizes that the multiverse is about to be destroyed and he takes the power of Beyonder in order to create a single reality out of all possible realities. This patchwork world is called Battleworld and is essentially where Secret Wars take place.
Doom rules Battleworld ruthlessly as a god until our heroes start piecing together what really happened.
The best part is, that RDJ already hinted at this as he was being revealed as Doom. RDJ’s exact words were “different mask, same task.” The actor implied that he will once again attempt to save the world but under a new iron mask this time around.
