Elyse Castro, an Australian artist, is expanding her 2017 animated short film The Summoning into a series of graphic novels. The original short, produced by FredFilms and Sony Animation, has gained millions of views on YouTube.

Castro has since continued to share stories from that world through comics on Instagram. Now, a full graphic novel series is on the way, with the first book set to release in October 2025.

The first book, titled The Summoning Vol. 1: The Art of the Craft, follows a young witch named Claire and her cat familiar Edgar as they work to improve Claire’s magical skills. Claire has the ability to bring art to life but wants to do more.

When a magical institution, the Ridgewood Coven, opens its doors after years of being closed, Claire decides to apply. But first, she must pass their tough application process.

Along the way, she’s helped by Edgar, a grumpy rabbit neighbor named Flufftops, a rival named Swan, and a few new friends. The story features magic, battles, and even friendship with Death. But as Claire dives deeper, she uncovers secrets about the Coven that could change everything.

The book will be published by Oni Press, and it’s part of a deal that includes the first three The Summoning graphic novels. The Art of the Craft will be released on October 7, 2025.

Elyse Castro’s agent, Judy Hansen, worked on the deal with Oni Press, and it’s sure to be an exciting addition for fans of the animated short.
