Karla Sofía Gascón has decided to step back from the public eye amid ongoing backlash over past comments. The actress, who made history as the first openly transgender performer nominated for an Oscar in an acting category, announced that she will not be participating in further campaign efforts for “Emilia Pérez.”
In an Instagram post, Gascón addressed the situation, saying she wanted the film to be recognized for what it is. “Following Jacques’ interview that I understand, I decided, for the film, for Jacques, for the cast, for the incredible crew who deserves it, for the beautiful adventure we all had together, to let the work talk for itself, hoping my silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is, a beautiful ode to love and difference,” she wrote. “I sincerely apologize to everyone who has been hurt along the way. Nam Myoho Renge Kyo.”
The controversy surrounding Gascón stems from resurfaced social media posts, some of which have been labeled as racist. The backlash intensified after an interview with “Emilia Pérez” director Jacques Audiard, who expressed his disappointment with her actions.
Audiard made it clear that he had distanced himself from Gascón, stating, “I haven’t spoken to her, and I don’t want to. She is in a self-destructive approach that I can’t interfere in, and I really don’t understand why she’s continuing. Why is she harming herself? Why? I don’t understand it, and what I don’t understand about this too is why she’s harming people who were very close to her.”
Gascón’s decision to step back marks a shift in her response to the controversy. Initially, she defended herself in a CNN en Español interview, which was reportedly done without consulting Netflix or the film’s PR team. Since then, Netflix has reportedly stopped covering her travel and styling expenses for awards season appearances.
“Emilia Pérez” has been a major contender this awards season, receiving 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Audiard, and acting nods for both Gascón and co-star Zoe Saldaña. However, Gascón’s past social media activity has overshadowed much of the film’s campaign efforts.
Tensions between Gascón and Netflix, which holds the distribution rights in multiple regions, have reportedly escalated. As a result, she has been removed from the film’s U.S. Oscar campaign and is not expected to attend award-related events in Los Angeles.
