The Boys, one of the world’s top superhero series, concluded its fourth season with a dramatic finish after eight episodes. Initially met with mixed reviews, the show gained momentum, earning a Certified Fresh rating and attracting a significant audience, as confirmed by Amazon and Nielsen. Despite some fans review-bombing the season over its increasing political themes, the showrunners remained unfazed.

The season wrapped up on July 18, 2024, with the release of the final episode, titled “Season Four Finale” (originally called “Assassination Run”—see our special report for details on the title change). We’ve already shared fan and critic reactions to this wildly unpredictable finale, which set the stage perfectly for the final season.

The creators of the series have also shared their reactions to the final episode and the season as a whole. In an interview with LADbible, series showrunner Eric Kripke offered his insights and opinions on the explosive finale, as well as Homelander’s role in the unfolding events.

In a brief, somewhat spoiler-filled recap, we can reveal that the Season 4 finale of The Boys has paved the way for a rather grim and unsettling future for the series. Amidst the chaos, it appears that Homelander has emerged victorious, as his coup—executed with Sage—seems to have succeeded, leaving him free to act as he pleases with The Boys seemingly out of the picture. This sets the stage for an intriguing final season, sparking discussions among fans worldwide about the episode and its implications.

In our recent articles, we covered the critics’ reactions to the episode and fan responses to some of the season’s key moments. We also discussed Antony Starr’s thoughts on his character’s triumph. However, no report would be complete without including insights from Eric Kripke.

Kripke frequently shares his thoughts on social media and has recently offered valuable insights in a series of interviews. It’s always intriguing to hear his perspective on the show, and his latest comments are no exception. In this instance, LADbible reached out to him regarding the Season 4 finale, and here’s what he had to say:

“You know, I think the finale of season four really shows you that we’ve been planning five years all along, because there’s no way a show goes one more season after the events of that finale. As far as we’re concerned, it’s our show’s version of the apocalypse.”

He also shared his thoughts on Homelander, whose role has shifted dramatically now that he has become the central figure and main villain controlling the series.

“Homelander gets everything he has wanted from the beginning, which is to completely remake the United States in his image, and according to his whims. The boys are at their lowest point, most of them are captured, and we worry for their future.”

So, what does this mean for the future? What should we expect going forward? Kripke also offered insights into what we can anticipate from the show’s final season:

“I always look at it as of the five seasons, we’re kind of at that point, that’s sort of the end of the second act of a movie where everyone’s really at their low point, and they’ve all faced their own personal demons. Now, they need to really come together in the fifth season and save the world.”

The situation is quite grim and depressing at the moment, leaving fans with little to cling to amidst these dark developments. However, Kripke has given us hope that Season 5 will bring a shift. The Boys are in a dire position, but they know their course of action. Their enemy is clearly defined, and with the help of their allies, they are poised to address the challenges ahead.

Despite the bleak outlook, we can look forward to an exciting final season. Stay tuned for all the latest news and updates!
