Season 4 of The Boys has wrapped up, and fans are eagerly anticipating the final season. The world of The Boys is in chaos, leaving everyone curious about how Eric Kripke and his team will address the current turmoil and what the aftermath of the impending showdown will look like.

While we will keep you updated with rumors and news about the upcoming season as they emerge, we can take a moment to reflect on Season 4, which has been the strongest installment yet and truly exceeded expectations.

Notably, Jeffrey Dean Morgan made a memorable guest appearance as CIA agent Joe Kessler. His character came with an unexpected twist that certainly caught viewers off guard. Given the popularity of Morgan’s role, we wanted to dive deeper into his character and share more details about one of the standout figures from the season.

As mentioned, Jeffrey Dean Morgan is yet another actor who made the leap from Supernatural to The Boys, and fans were thrilled with his appearance in the series.

There’s a significant twist related to his character, which we won’t reveal here for those who haven’t seen Season 4 yet. It’s easy to see why he quickly became one of the show’s most beloved characters.

In light of this, showrunner Eric Kripke was asked whether the character was created with Morgan in mind or if it was the other way around. Here’s what Kripke had to say:

This season, you’ve got Jeffrey Dean Morgan and some other big names. How do you go about presenting something to these actors? Do you write for specific people, or do you bring them in and say, here’s what you’ve got?

Eric Kripke: It’s different every time. In Jeffrey Dean’s case, we know each other well from Supernatural, obviously. We had been talking for a while about trying to get him into The Boys and his schedule was opening up.

At that point, you go into the writer’s room and say, “We have Jeffrey Dean if we can find the right role for him.” Then, we kick around what’s best for the story. The story always comes first.

Someone cooked up that character and we needed, basically, an actor who was as ruthless and charismatic as Billy Butcher. The minute that came up, I said, “We should do this character because that would be perfect for Jeffrey Dean.”

With some of the other cameos, we’ll write in the script something like “huge Hollywood star” and then I’ll talk to Seth Rogen and ask, “You have any buddies you want to call?” I have a much smaller Rolodex than Seth does, but I have a few names I can call, too (laughs). Then, we see who’s available and who can play that part.
