‘Eyes of Wakanda’ Showrunner On Why Black Panther Prequel Had To Be Animated and Not Live-Action

The animated series Eyes of Wakanda is set to bring a unique storytelling experience to the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it debuts on Disney+ on August 6, 2025. Created as a four-episode prequel to the Black Panther films, the show explores Wakandan history through the lens of its elite warriors, the Hatut Zaraze. These brave soldiers undertake dangerous missions to recover stolen Vibranium and protect Wakanda’s secrets from the world.

According to showrunner Todd Harris, animation was the only medium that could do justice to the series’ ambitious narrative. In a statement about Marvel Animation’s 2025 lineup, Harris explained that the story has been in development for years. “Animation is the ultimate equalizer of locations,” he said.

“We could seamlessly move from Egypt to New York City, or even to the moon, without the limitations of live-action filming. This allowed us to create an idealized version of history untouched by real-world constraints.”

Announced in December 2023, Eyes of Wakanda dives deep into Wakandan lore, portraying the Hatut Zaraze as the nation’s covert operatives. Often referred to as “Wakanda’s CIA,” these warriors not only retrieve stolen Vibranium but also work to protect Wakanda’s secrets and sovereignty.

Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s Head of Television and Animation, emphasized the Hatut Zaraze’s crucial role in keeping Wakanda secure. “Their missions test their loyalty to their homeland as they confront the wider world,” he shared.

The series boasts an impressive voice cast, including Winnie Harlow, Cress Williams, Patricia Belcher, and Anika Noni Rose. Executive producers include Black Panther filmmaker Ryan Coogler, alongside Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, and others.

Unlike other Marvel animated projects like What If…? or X-Men ’97, Eyes of Wakanda is firmly rooted in the MCU’s sacred timeline. Winderbaum highlighted its significance: “It’s a fascinating look into Wakandan history and mythology, seamlessly tied into the MCU’s continuity.”

Eyes of Wakanda arrives amid growing curiosity about Wakanda’s future in the MCU. While the Black Panther films have been major successes, Marvel has yet to confirm a third installment.

Chadwick Boseman’s death in 2020 led to a narrative shift, with T’Challa’s younger sister, Shuri, stepping into the Black Panther role in Wakanda Forever. Reports suggest Marvel is now seeking a new actor to play T’Challa for future projects, starting with upcoming Avengers films.
