Fans Are Worried that Osha’s Kyber Crystal Bleeding Breaks Canon – It Doesn’t
If there’s one thing that will send ‘The Acolyte’ into the annals of Star Wars history, it’s the frequent accusations that it breaks canon. Everything started with Ki-Adi-Mundi, his age, and the fact that if the Sith was shown in ‘The Acolyte,’ it renders his sentences on how Sith haven’t been seen for millennia in ‘The Phantom Menace,’ – pointless.
Despite the showing eventually correcting this by killing all the Jedi that actually did hear Qimir identifying himself as Sith, the final episode introduced one more issue, Kyber crystal bleeding.
The issue lies in the fact that some fans claim that Anakin’s lightsaber should have turned red either during his battle against Obi-Wan on Mustafar or when he was killing younglings. Although it could have possibly happened, it didn’t for a very good reason.
To bleed a Kyber crystal, you need to pour all your hatred and menace into it, which destabilizes it, turns to the dark side and essentially turns it red, and this is why Sith lightsabers are traditionally red unlike the plethora of other colors we can see wielded by the Jedi.
Anakin had plenty of anger and hatred inside him, but he lacked a Kyber crystal taken from the fallen Jedi, which is one pre-requisite to actually bleed it.

Since kyber crystals are naturally attuned to the light side of the Force, those who serve the dark side must follow a different path. First, they must seize a pure crystal from the lightsaber of a Jedi they have vanquished in combat—for the saber of a Sith is not given. It is taken. Then, they must infuse that crystal with their pain, anger, and hatred, bending it to their will. This corrupts the crystal, aligning it with the dark side and making it bleed with unbridled crimson power.
The entry was taken from Star Wars: The Secrets of the Sith a canon reference book written by Marc Sumerak and describes exactly why Anakin couldn’t have bled his lightsaber right away.
He did eventually bleed his crystal when he returned to Mustafar with a Kyber crystal he had taken from Jedi Master Kirak Infil’a on the river moon Al’doleem, as was described in ‘Star Wars: Darth Vader #5.’
Osha could immediately turn her crystal from blue and red because her crystal was taken from Master Sol, who she defeated in combat. This detail is also presumably one of the reasons why Mae was lacking a lightsaber and why she was desperately trying to grab her opponent’s lightsabers during combat while she was hunting the Jedi down, so she could claim one and bleed it.
