Matt Reeves’ The Batman was a massive success, but despite its acclaim, it won’t connect with James Gunn’s new DCU, which will feature a different Batman. While Gunn is crafting his own Batman films for the DCU, Reeves is focused on his own trilogy at Warner Bros. It will be interesting to see how these two universes diverge, especially given the success of Reeves’ film.
Reeves has the creative freedom to craft his own narratives, and based on the impressive reception of the first movie, fans are excited about what’s to come. In a recent Deadline interview, Reeves dropped some intriguing hints about the second film in his series. These clues have led some fans to believe that Reeves might be bringing a major villainous organization to the big screen.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Reeves shared some insights into the plot of the upcoming second movie:
“[The movie is] going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places that he couldn’t anticipate in the first one. The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie, and it expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see. Batman is constantly battling these forces. But those forces can’t be entirely exorcised. So the next movie delves deeper into that.”

Although Reeves hasn’t revealed specific details about the movie’s villains and there’s speculation that multiple antagonists might appear, many fans, including our friends at ScreenRant, interpret his hints as pointing toward one major reveal: The Court of Owls could be making their big-screen debut!
For those unfamiliar, the Court of Owls is a secretive group composed of Gotham’s wealthiest and most powerful individuals, who covertly control the city from the shadows. Introduced during the New 52 era, they are a relatively recent addition to the Batman mythos but have quickly become a symbol of Gotham’s entrenched corruption.
Given the clues, the Court of Owls seems to match the description more closely than any other character or organization, fueling fan speculation. As Karlis Wilde puts it:
While there are arguments that The Court of Owls are unlikely to appear in The Batman Part II, the fact is that the group fits in perfectly with the story already told in Matt Reeves’ crime saga. Much of the groundwork has already been laid concerning corruption in Gotham City, and having Batman face a group of powerful villains with significant ties to the city would make sense. Institutional power and its corrupting elements was a major theme of The Batman, and I’m sure this will be explored further with The Court of Owls in The Batman Part II.

Beyond the comics, the Court of Owls has made live-action appearances in the critically acclaimed series Gotham, where they were featured as villains in the season, and in the video game Gotham Knights, where they served as the primary antagonists. Could a movie debut be on the horizon? We certainly hope so!
