This year’s SDCC has had several new and exciting reveals for the MCU. Fans were treated to exclusive looks related to ‘Thunderbolts*,’ ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ and we’ve learned that Robert Downey Jr. is back in the MCU this time as Doctor Doom.

There’s also a recent release of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine‘ which marked a turning point for Disney’s recent losses. If you’re following the franchise you are likely aware that Phase 4 and Phase 5 lost a significant amount of money for the media company, especially two of 3 last year’s releases, ‘The Marvels,’ and ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.’

The losses were not monetary alone, fans rapidly started losing interest due to the perceived lack of quality. Something happened during Phase 4 of the MCU that fans did not quite like, and it’s still the lowest-rated overall most of its projects having “mixed” reviews at best.

Now ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ introduced one significant concept for the future of the MCU, the concept of anchor. Anchor being is a being vital for the survival of reality. Once the anchor being dies the reality starts deteriorating. The process of timeline destruction can take anywhere between a single day to thousands of years. In Deadpool’s reality, the anchor being was Logan aka Wolverine who died during the events of ‘Logan’ released in 2017.

Mr. Paradox wanted to speed up the process by employing Timeripper, and this is basically what the plot of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ was as Deadpool attempts to restore his timeline following Anchor’s death.

Now fans have developed an interesting but funny theory that the variant of Iron Man which died during the events of ‘Endgame’ was Earth-616’s anchor being. Following Iron Man’s death the timeline started rapidly deteriorating which resulted in bad Phase 4 and Phase 5 projects.

This would mean that low-quality projects are in fact, canon to the MCU and it was always supposed to be like this.

This theory no matter how funny it is, does make some sense. Robert Downey Jr. ultimately said “same task different mask” which would mean that he would get to save the MCU once again.

Different sets of rumors however point in the direction of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man being Earth-616’s timeline, it can go either way.
