Fans Disappointed that Channing Tatum’s Gambit Will Reportedly Be Treated as Krasinski’s Reed Richards in the MCU: “It was meh”

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ was released a week ago, and it’s breaking box-office records left and right. The movie was generally received well by the fans, although some critics really didn’t appreciate cameos and jokes that landed well only if you understand like 20 years of history related to the Fox X-Men franchise.

Speaking of cameos, the movie was rumored to include over 20 characters, some rumors came true while some fell through, among the rumors that came true was Channing Tatum’s Gambit.

Tatum wanted to play Gambit for years, and fans wanted to see him in the role for equally as long. The ‘Foxcatcher’ star and his longtime colleague and producer Reid Carolin had an idea they wanted to pitch to 21st Century Fox. It was going to be a standalone movie that follows the X-Men character Gambit. It was imagined similarly to Deadpool in its raunchiness and humor.

While the 21st Century Fox team liked the idea, they wouldn’t fully approve if it’s Carolin or Tatum directing. Tatum said in a Variety interview,

They wanted anybody but us, essentially, because we had never directed anything.

Tatum really fell in love with the project so he decided that they would let someone else direct the movie.

The movie release date was set for March 2020, but when Fox and Disney announced that they were in the process of a merger. Disney was going to take over key assets from 21st Century Fox. This means their film and television studios, all of their networks, and stakes in different companies.

Unfortunately, after the merger, the Gambit movie was one of the first projects that were canceled. This left Tatum feeling devastated and after this, he didn’t want to think about other potential Marvel movies that came his way. He said to Variety,

Once Gambit went away, I was so traumatized… I shut off my Marvel machine. I haven’t been able to see any of the movies. I loved that character. It was just too sad. It was like losing a friend because I was so ready to play him.

Tatum finally got the opportunity to play the character in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ it was a minor role but significant for Tatum. Now we know that the X-Men live-action reboot is on the way, and according to most recent rumors the proposed lineup of mutants for the movie is exactly the same as in ‘X-Men ’97.’

This means that Gambit will be in the MCU’s lineup of mutants (likely.) What does this mean for Tatum’s Gambit? If the recent leaks are to be believed pretty much nothing. The actor is not expected to reprise his role and become the primary version of the character within the cinematic universe.

The studio is likely looking for someone younger if the actors are expected to play their roles for 10+ years.

The exact same thing happened with John Krasinski’s Reed Richards, who appeared in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.’ Fans have been fan-casting Krasinski in the role for years, so that was a case of fan service and not a result of Krasinski badly wanting to play the role. Allegedly the role was offered to the actor but he refused it.

Ultimately this left fans more disappointed, and the same thing is predicted to happen with Tatum’s Gambit as well.

Fans also noted that his portrayal of Gambit wasn’t that well in the first place:
