Ranker is a popular website where users can rank anything they like, in any way they want, at any time. The rankings are driven by fans and are not officially connected to the creators of the projects being ranked.
Recently, Ranker conducted a large survey to determine the most overpowered comic book superheroes. While the list includes many characters, we’ve narrowed it down to the top ten for a more focused look.
Our report includes these top ten characters, along with our own insights and commentary to give the list some extra depth. (Note: The powers and abilities listed are sourced from Ranker and are meant for illustrative purposes, so they may be incomplete.)
Since this is such a significant list, we felt it was worth sharing. We’ll present the results from 10th to 1st place, and we hope you enjoy the breakdown!
10. Sentry
Powers & Abilities: superhuman strength, flight, energy manipulation, molecular manipulation, void persona, immortality, and plenty more.
Sentry is a fitting character to kick off this list. Deciding which characters are truly overpowered can be tricky, as some do earn their abilities. However, with Sentry, we never quite see why he deserves the immense power he possesses.
It often felt like he simply stumbled upon his abilities, rather than earning them through any clear storyline. That said, he’s still a pretty cool character!
9. Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel
Powers & Abilities: Superhuman Strength, Flight, Energy Manipulation, Energy Absorption and plenty more.
Captain Marvel isn’t a character we would typically include on this list. While she is undeniably overpowered, her abilities, though acquired somewhat accidentally, were honed through hard work and experience. Her immense power comes from her training and growth, rather than just the circumstances of how she gained her powers. So, while she is overpowered, she doesn’t quite deserve a spot on this list.
8. Shazam
Powers & Abilities: Flight, Magic, Telepathy, Superhuman speed, Superhuman Strength, Energy Manipulation, Wisdom, and plenty more.
Billy Batson gained his powers by meeting certain mysterious criteria, though it’s not entirely clear what that entails. While it’s a fun and inspiring story for younger audiences, showing that even kids can become superheroes, it’s hard to ignore that Billy was granted an immense array of powers simply for being good. That’s why we definitely consider Shazam one of the most overpowered superheroes in comics.
7. Martian Manhunter
Powers & Abilities: Flight, Psychokinesis, Invisibility, Shapeshifting, Telepathy and plenty more.
In our view, this ranking isn’t entirely fair. While Martian Manhunter might have one or two fewer powers, he’s a Martian, meaning he doesn’t follow the same rules as humans. Given that, it makes sense for him to have such a wide range of abilities. Additionally, he has clear weaknesses that balance out his powers, which is why we disagree with his position on this list.
6. Silver Surfer
Powers & Abilities: Power Cosmic, Energy Manipulation, Superhuman Strength, Invulnerability, Matter Manipulation, and plenty more.
Similar to how Billy Batson became Shazam, the Silver Surfer was chosen based on specific traits. However, unlike Shazam, who is often defined by his heroic qualities, Silver Surfer is not only known as a herald but also possesses immense power and skill at all times. While the story doesn’t always explain why he has such abilities, it’s clear that he meets the criteria for being overpowered. Therefore, we can agree with his place on this list.
5. Jean Grey
Powers & Abilities: Extrasensory perception, Flight, Psychokinesis, Telepathy, Eidetic memory, Molecular Manipulation, Phoenix Force (when bonded), and plenty more.
Jean Grey is an iconic character with immense importance in X-Men lore, though her story has been revisited a bit too often—something we’ll save for another list. She is undeniably powerful, even overpowered, and while she’s considered a “Wunderkind” in the X-Men universe, we do think she could be slightly toned down in terms of abilities.
However, we’d still place her lower on this list, as she’s not as much of a threat in comparison to some others.
4. Franklin Richards
Powers & Abilities: Nearly Omnipotent (was depowered completely)
Franklin Richards is one of the most powerful characters in Marvel history, and it’s not hard to see why—he simply is. While he’s a fantastic character in many ways, the sheer scale of his powers creates a clear imbalance that can’t be overlooked. Because of this, we fully agree with his position on this list and would even rank him higher. In our opinion, he definitely deserves a top-three spot.
3. One-Punch Man
Powers & Abilities: Superhuman speed, Superhuman strength
The issue with Saitama isn’t that he’s incredibly powerful, but rather how he gained that power. He became the strongest person in the universe simply by training, which is already an exaggeration.
However, this makes sense within the context of One-Punch Man, as it’s a parody series built around that concept. Still, we agree that Saitama is undeniably overpowered, and we think there should be more manga characters included on this list.
2. Superman
Powers & Abilities: Flight, Healing factor, Superhuman speed, Superhuman strength
We’re a bit torn on this one, but in the end, we agree that Superman does belong on this list. While he didn’t have all his powers on Krypton, it’s been explained multiple times that his abilities are the result of Earth’s environment.
Yes, his well-known weaknesses balance things out to some extent, but overall, we do think Superman deserves his spot here.
1. Scarlet Witch
Powers & Abilities: Reality warping, Chaos Magic, Telekinesis, Energy Manipulation, Probability Manipulation, and many more.
As a magic user, Scarlet Witch is undoubtedly overpowered, but we wouldn’t place her at the top of this list, especially with characters ranked 2-4 below her. If we were to include her, she’d likely fall in the bottom five. While her backstory and powers are well-explained, we feel that ranking her higher would be unfair given the context of her character.
