First Look: BDX Droids Spotted on Set of ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’!

Lucasfilm originally planned to continue The Mandalorian with a fourth season, but delays due to labor disputes led them to rethink their approach. Instead, they decided to focus on a movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, which was officially announced in January 2024. Jon Favreau was set to direct, co-write with Dave Filoni, and produce alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Filoni, and Ian Bryce.
Filming was expected to begin in June 2024, making it the first Star Wars film to move forward since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.
Filming began under the working title Thunder Alley in June 2024 and lasted 92 days. The production had a large team, with 54 cast members, 3,500 extras, and 500 crew members.
By early August, Favreau and Filoni confirmed that filming had started weeks earlier. The movie would feature familiar characters, including Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios from Rebels and the Anzellan species seen in The Rise of Skywalker and The Mandalorian Season 3. A new version of the Razor Crest, the Mandalorian’s ship destroyed in Season 2, was also set to appear.
Sigourney Weaver officially joined the cast in late August. Filming wrapped by early December 2024. The movie is currently in post-production and we finally landed some “first looks” at adorable BDX Droids from the set of the movie:
The BDX droids were first shown at Disney park events last year, where they impressed visitors by moving around, interacting with guests, and adding excitement to Star Wars areas. While their exact features are still a secret, they are expected to make Star Wars attractions even more immersive and interactive.
And apparently, we can expect to be a part of the movie as well. The Mandalorian & Grogu is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 22, 2026.
