‘G.I Joe’ to Revive an 1980s Classic Take in New April Issue
In April 2025, Skybound Entertainment will honor one of the most celebrated G.I. Joe comics ever made with a new series called G.I. Joe: Silent Missions. This set of five dialogue-free one-shots will spotlight characters like Beach Head, Jinx, Spirit, Roadblock, and Duke, showcasing unique stories from top comic creators.
The project begins on April 2nd with a reprint of the iconic 1983 G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #21, better known as ‘Silent Interlude.’ Written and drawn by Larry Hama with art from Steve Leialoha, this issue became a groundbreaking moment for comics. It featured Snake Eyes infiltrating Destro’s castle to rescue Scarlett—all told without a single word of dialogue.
Skybound’s Silent Missions builds on this legacy. Writers and artists like Phil Hester, Dani, Dan Watters, Leonardo Romero, Andrew Krahnke, and Wes Craig will each handle one of the new issues. Just like the original, these stories will rely solely on visuals to tell the tale, which has become a rare and celebrated storytelling style.
Larry Hama himself is involved in the reprint edition, which will feature a cover by Ed Hannigan and a variant by Andy Kubert. Alongside Snake Eyes’ unforgettable rescue mission, this edition is a must-have for both longtime readers and anyone curious about what made ‘Silent Interlude’ such a masterpiece.
While Skybound recently launched G.I. Joe into the shared Energon Universe with Transformers, this Silent Missions series appears to remain within the classic G.I. Joe timeline. This is great news for those who love the original continuity, which began with Hama’s work in 1982.
With weekly releases through April, Silent Missions is shaping up to be a major event. It’s not every day that a publisher revisits such a milestone with new stories that honor the original while taking fresh creative approaches. For those of us who still marvel at the brilliance of ‘Silent Interlude,’ this feels like a celebration that’s been long overdue.
