Grace Caroline Currey and Virginia Gardner Comment on Their Superhero Roles and Possible DC Return

During the inaugural Comic-Con: The Cruise, Fall stars Grace Caroline Currey and Virginia “Ginny” Gardner sat down to discuss their experiences in the superhero world, including their time with DC and Marvel, and their thoughts on potentially returning to the DC Universe.

Both actresses have notable roles in the superhero genre, with Currey starring in Shazam! and its sequel, while Gardner is best known for her role in Marvel’s Runaways. They shared their thoughts on working in these expansive superhero worlds and the excitement of being a part of such iconic franchises.

Currey reflected on her time in the DC Universe, mentioning her childhood connection to the iconic characters. “I grew up watching the animated series like the ‘Batman’ animated series, ‘Justice League,’ and so getting to dive into that world, especially with DC, was amazing,” she shared. “It’s pretty cool to get to exist in that same universe, as much as it can be, you know, with all the different worlds that we don’t have with DC.

She also spoke about her costume experience on Shazam!, describing how surreal it felt to wear a custom superhero suit made just for her. “They did a whole 3D scan for that project, and everything just fit like a glove,” she said. “What’s really cool is the wardrobe tries to conceal any sign of a zipper or button so that it looks like you just appear into a superhero form.”

For Currey, stepping into the DC Universe was a dream come true, allowing her to be a part of the same world as Batman and Superman.

While Currey had the opportunity to wear a superhero suit in Shazam!, Gardner’s experience on Runaways was a little different. “We never had superhero suits on Runaways,” Gardner explained. “We just had superpowers. But it was something we were all bummed about when we found out we weren’t gonna have suits because you want that amazing experience.”

Despite the lack of superhero suits, Gardner thoroughly enjoyed the unique experience of playing a superhero. “My character could fly, so I think you flew as well, right? Yeah, which is so fun. The wire work and stuff is just amazing,” she added. She mentioned how grateful she was to be part of such an exciting universe and said, “It was such an amazing universe to be a part of for a few years.”

As the DC Universe undergoes a reboot under James Gunn, the actresses were asked if they’d be interested in returning to the DC world. Both expressed excitement at the possibility, even if it meant stepping into new roles.

That’s been very nice to see people say that,” Currey said when asked about fan casting her as a new DC character. “I think getting to be in the universe at all has been such a lottery kind of feeling. I don’t know if I got to come back in any capacity, that’d be wild.

Gardner agreed, adding, “I would love to just be able to play Karolina again or another character in that universe. It’s just been like a lottery win to be a part of it for a brief period of time, but I’d love to come back in any way the opportunity came up.

Both actresses expressed their gratitude for their time in the superhero world, even if it was brief, and emphasized that they would be open to new opportunities should they arise.
