A Cash Cow

The trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was dropped late last week, and just like the rest of the world, I was blown away. When the first one came out, I never thought that I would want to watch (on more than one occasion) a movie that features a talking tree and a raccoon.

Alas, it didn’t work out that way.

Judging by the numbers up above, it didn’t work out this way for any of us.

So then, it makes you wonder if the second movie will have the chutzpah that the first one had and become a huge success?

It will no doubt surpass the standard that the first one set. How could it not? The original didn’t get past the billion dollar mark and every “team” movie since has.

Avengers: $1,519,479,547

Avengers: Age of Ultron – $1,404,705,868

Captain America: Civil War – $1,151,684,349

Disney understands that they have a winner on their hands and will pull out all the stops to see that it capitalizes on the success of not only the first movie but the Marvel Studio brand.

What about the cast? Will the characters change?

Star Lord

Peter Quill/Star Lord

Well, rumor has it/it has been confirmed that the story will follow Peter Quill (Star Lord) and his quest to be reunited with his father. If you remember from the first one, he never got a chance to meet his dad. He will, in fact, reunite with him and learn that he is none other than Ego The Living Planet. The movie will most certainly revolve around Peter and his coming to terms that not only is he half alien, but his father is this thing:Ego The Living Planet

Yeesh.

Could anyone come to terms with that?

Luckily, James Gunn has said that Ego will take on a more human form.

Makes me feel like we dodged a bullet with that one.

Gamora

What about Gamora?

Last we saw, Gamora has turned face quicker than a WWE star. In the beginning of the first Guardians movie, she was a full-fledged villain working alongisde Ronan and her “father”, Thanos. By movies end, she had joined the Guardians, angered Thanos and beat up her sister, Nebula.

I am willing to bet that there will be some sort of showdown between Gamora and Nebula in this movie. Judging by the trailer, it’s going to be good.

Drax the destroyer

Ronan is dead. Now what?

The only reason Drax existed in Guardians was to kill the man responsible for killing his family. By the end of the movie, Ronan was dead and Drax had nothing left to do.

If I am right, and I think I am, this movie will continue to flesh out Drax’s past. It will give some insight as to why and how his family died.

From there, Drax will refocus and deal with other matters, namely Thanos. The two have a long history in the comics and have gone up against each other on more than one occasion. This movie will be no different.

rocket-and-groot

Rocket and Groot

Groot died, or at least if you didn’t watch the credits scene, you are made to believe this.

If you stayed around, you know that not only is he alive, but he loves the Jackson 5.

From what I can tell, Groot will be in GotG2, but not as the mature, full character that the world fell in love with. Rocket and Groot will have to come to terms that Groot is alive, but not as someone who can handle their own. He will be in his “baby” Groot form and have no recollection of what happened to him at the end of the first movie.

Nebula

Nebula?

Kevin Fiege has said that Nebula will be back.

Yey! Having nearly not enough screen time, I’m excited.

Last we saw her, she had survived her fall and was flying off to who knows where.

What will she be doing in the next movie?

Your guess is as good as mine.

Yondu

What about the blue guy with the mohawk?

Yondu?

Oh, he’ll be back. The director, James Gunn, has gone on record stating that not only will he be back, but he will be joining the ranks of the Guardians as a full-fledged member.

How?

I have no idea.

It is an interesting thought, isn’t it?

Maybe, Peter will be able to turn the long standing joke that Yondu saved him when he was young, around and now Peter has saved Yondu.

Mantis Marvel

Who is Mantis?

Yeah, exactly. Who is Mantis?

Mantis was born in Vietnam, only to be left at a Kree temple by her father at a very young age. The inhabiting priests believed her destined to become the most important being in the universe and thus she was trained as a warrior.

Mantis is one of the foremost fighters in the entire Marvel Universe. Not only is she extremely strong and agile, but she has this amazing ability to find and exploit the weak points of her enemies.

If that doesn’t excite you, know this. She is played by Pom Klementieff of Canada. Yep, she is Canadian!

Ayesha Marvel

A name you need to know – Ayesha

Ayesha, originally born a man, took up hibernation in a coccoon and came out a women.

Yeah…

All you need to know is she is powerful…extremely powerful.

Ayesha is the second attempt by the Enclave to create a super powered lifeform. Adam Warlock was the first.

What can she do? She has the ability to manipulate cosmic energy and fly. Oh, and she can regenrate, making her seemingly immortal.

Now what?

The answer is pretty obvious, isn’t it?

Sit back, pay your money and watch Marvel rake in a billion dollars.
