Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the next 32nd movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This movie will conclude the trilogy that James Gunn started in 2014 with the original movie that turned the members of the titular team into A-list Marvel characters. Nine years later, the weirdest family in the Galaxy returned for their sequel in 2017; they appeared in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and so far in the post-Endgame saga, they appeared in Thor: Love and Thunder and their own Holiday Special on Disney+.
Now, James Gunn is ready to close the Guardians of the Galaxy chapter with the third installment this May. And less than two months before the premiere, we received the news that the movie recently finished its post-production and received its MPA (Motion Picture Association) rating. As it usually goes with the MCU, the third Guardians movie will be rated PG-13. The movie received this rating for “intense sequences of violence and action, strong language, suggestive/drug references, and thematic elements.”
James Gunn wrote and directed the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, released in 2014. The movie introduced the titular team into the MCU, and it was both critically and commercially successful, giving this team the popularity they didn’t have before. Thanks to that success, the sequel Vol. 2 followed in 2017, and it was equally successful as its predecessor.
The team of Guardians was featured in two crossover movies Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor joined the team at the end of Avengers: Endgame, and his next movie Thor: Love and Thunder, showed how he parted his ways with Guardians, and the team returned in their Holiday Special, which showed how Drax and Mantis tried to give Star-Lord an unforgettable Christmas after he lost his girlfriend, Gamora. The Holiday Special also featured the special guest appearance of Kevin Bacon, who was mentioned as Star-Lord’s idol in his previous MCU appearances.
Some fans think that the MCU lost its way after the conclusion of the Infinity Saga. But even they will most likely be excited for this next movie because it will feature a very known and beloved team, and it will be their own Endgame. Writer and director James Gunn is teasing a big and emotional film in which not all main characters will survive to see the end of the movie. There are some options that the team Guardians will return in more MCU movies, but this movie will certainly be the final chapter for some team members, and James Gunn confirmed Volume 3 as his final Marvel movie.
Last year, James Gunn was assigned to the position of co-CEO of DC Studios. He will also write and direct the upcoming DC movie Superman: Legacy. His final Marvel movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is set to be released on May 5, 2023—exactly six years since the release of Vol. 2.
