Halle Berry is no stranger to superhero media. Fans of Marvel adaptations know that the actress portrayed Storm, one of the most notable mutants in the history of comics, and fans of DC comics know her as Catwoman.
Catwoman is one of the most notable Batman supporting characters, so at the time, it seemed like a good idea to give the character a standalone movie, but the movie ended up being so bad it almost ruined Berry’s career.
The movie was released over 20 years ago, was widely criticized and underperformed at the box office, earning $82 million against a $100 million budget. It received seven Golden Raspberry Award nominations and won four, including Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Halle Berry), Worst Director, and Worst Screenplay.
It still regularly resurfaces online on top lists related to the worst superhero movies of all time and it’s still a meme factory that keeps on giving.
The actress herself however has good humor about it. Speaking to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Berry said that she likes the movie looking back at it, and she is glad that younger audiences are rediscovering it:
I loved it. It got panned. The critics said it sucked balls. And balls aren’t that bad. What I’m happy about is that the children have found it now on the internet, and they love it, so, it’s so vindicating. Because now they’re saying it’s cool and what the heck was everybody’s problem with it, so like, I’m like, ‘I’m so brat now. […] People have the freedom to discover it on their own without a reminder of what critics said about it. Younger generations don’t know what was said back then. They discover it on their own and enjoy its merits without being mind-led to think a certain way.
The actress also admitted that she would be willing to return to Catwoman but only if she could direct the movie. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
