A live-action ‘Harry Potter’ TV series was first reported to be in development for HBO Max in January 2021. However, there were issues with rights to the franchise due to an existing deal with Warner Bros. that lasted until April 2025.

The series was officially confirmed in April 2023 and will be available on Max (formerly HBO Max). In February 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said the show would launch in 2026. Then, in June 2024, it was announced that the series would be moved from Max to HBO.

So far nothing is known about the show in the official sense, no actors have been officially cast, but Mark Rylance is close to being signed for the role of Albus Dumbledore. There have been rumors about actors, including Cillian Murphy for the role of Lord Voldemort, but these are not true and were never confirmed by the official sources.

Now sources close to The Hollywood Reporter claim that Paapa Essiedu is being eyes for the role of Severus Snape. Paapa Essiedu gained recognition for his role in ‘I May Destroy You’ (2020), earning Emmy and BAFTA nominations, and played George Boleyn in ‘Anne Boleyn’ (2021). He also starred in ‘Gangs of London’ (2020–2022), ‘The Lazarus Project’ (2020–2023), and ‘Black Mirror: Demon 79’ (2023), while making his film debut in ‘Murder on the Orient Express ‘(2017) and starring in ‘Men’ (2022) and ‘Genie’ (2023).

The role of Snape is one of the most important in the series, in large part thanks to his connection to the main character and his family history.

If Paapa Essiedu is cast, it will show HBO’s commitment to diversity in the series, especially in light of all the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling, offering a fresh take on the character, as the films were criticized for having an all-white main cast. HBO stated they will confirm details about the casting as they finalize deals, acknowledging the rumors and speculation surrounding the series.
