Did You Know Henry Cavill Supported the Controversial Black Superman Project?

Warner Bros., the company that holds the rights to DC Comics characters, aimed to create its own shared universe after witnessing the success of Disney’s MCU. This ambition led to the formation of the initial DCEU.

Despite its potential, star power, and several great films, the DCEU was doomed to fail due to a series of poor decisions and miscalculations.

In the meantime, James Gunn was brought in to revitalize and lead the new DCU, resulting in numerous changes, including casting shifts, new project announcements, and the cancellation or alteration of existing projects.

One of the DCEU’s more controversial initiatives was the planned Black Superman film, spearheaded by J.J. Abrams. This movie aimed to introduce Calvin Ellis as Superman, following his debut in Final Crisis #7. Michael B. Jordan was set to play the role, and while the project’s future remains uncertain, it recently received support from an intriguing source!

Earlier this year, we reported that James Gunn confirmed that Abrams’ Elseworlds project featuring Calvin Ellis is still in development. While we don’t have specific details, it appears that Gunn is moving forward with the project, and we might actually see Calvin Ellis on screen.

This would be exciting, as Ellis serves as the President of the United States in his universe, making it incredible to see Superman in such a powerful role.

Additionally, we came across an old interview that highlights support for the project from a noteworthy source, which is definitely worth mentioning given everything that has transpired since that 2021 interview. Here’s the quote:

It’s exciting — Superman’s far more than skin color. Superman is an ideal. Superman’s an extraordinary thing that lives within our hearts. Why not have multiple Supermen going on?

Joaquin Phoenix did a wonderful Joker movie; so what if it’s not tied to the rest of [the franchise]? They have multiple Superman comic book storylines happening at the same time.

Who said this? It was none other than Henry Cavill himself. The actor who portrayed Superman in the DCEU expressed his support for Abrams’ project, believing it could be just as successful as Phillips’ Joker movie, which was also part of the Elseworlds brand.

These films have been successful so far, so if Abrams’ project moves ahead, we hope it will align with the previous Elseworlds projects and deliver another fantastic movie in the future.
