This year’s SDCC has dropped several massive announcements to the fans of the MCU. First, we learned that the MCU is seemingly no longer moving forward with Kang the Conqueror as the main villain in the MCU, as ‘Avengers: Kangy Dynasty’ has been retitled ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’

Second, we’ve learned that Doctor Doom will be portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., an announcement that so far has had mixed reactions. A large portion of fans believe that bringing on both RDJ and Doom has been a mistake, and not only due to those fans wanting Kang’s story to be concluded in the fitting way.

The biggest reason why fans are highly skeptical of Doom is the fact that the character has had no buildup and introduction so far. We know that Kang the Conqueror/Timely/He Who Remains have been present in three projects so far ‘Loki’ Seasons 1 & 2, and ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ this is a significant buildup that now needs to be completely replaced and Kang’s story needs to be concluded. It would make no sense if the character is simply no longer mentioned in the MCU.

The next issue is the fact that RDJ is playing Doctor Doom, and plenty of fans already pointed out the fact that they can’t divorce RDJ from his role as Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr. is strongly associated with his iconic portrayal of Iron Man, especially with the character’s heroic death in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Despite other talented actors being suggested for Doctor Doom, Downey Jr.’s casting in the role is seen by some as a sign of desperation.

On one hand, fans now have expectations that Doom and Iron Man will be connected in the MCU, which some criticize as creative bankruptcy while making the two characters unconnected in all aspects only makes the casting weirder.

The overall consensus is that Doom’s casting feels cheap and creatively bankrupt and has massive chances of backfiring, especially in light of recent Multiverse criticizing and a big portion of fans being sick of the concept. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
