‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is the most recent MCU release. It’s Deadpool’s & Wolverine’s first foray into the MCU and it marks the first time that X-Men are acknowledged as the legitimate team within an MCU movie.

So far, the MCU has toyed with the concept of mutants but it was never as straightforward as it was now. There were also numerous references and easter eggs to X-Men, but the team was never mentioned quite in the same way as it was in the latest MCU installment.

We already have several mutants in the mainline MCU, Kamala Khan and Namor first come to mind, who will surely make additional appearances in future projects. There is also that cameo Professor X and Beast made in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ and ‘The Marvels.’

Feige himself commented that ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ has a pivotal role when it comes to mutants in the MCU. The MCU boss stated that the era of mutants is beginning and everything starts with this movie. He also rated ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ as being an 8 when it comes to the effect it has on the future of the MCU, on a scale from 1 to 10.

It’s just the beginning. I’ve said that mutants are coming, and it all starts with this movie. I can’t wait for people to see what [Deadpool & Wolverine] has in store and know that this is the beginning of mutants finally, finally arriving into the MCU.

But, when can we expect to see mutants in droves? Well, I’m afraid that the standalone X-Men movie will not be released soon. Our best bet is that mutants will tear apart the MCU in ‘Secret Wars.’ Months ago, rumors were spreading that the MCU was bound for a reset, and that reset would be ‘Secret Wars,’ which makes complete sense if you’re familiar with the comic storyline that inspired the name.

Apparently, after the MCU resets only mutants and Fantastic Four will be left in the mainline MCU. We’re likely not going to see anything related to X-Men or mutants in the next several projects, but everytime incursion takes place, or is referenced within a Marvel project, you should know that this means that mutants are one step closer to the MCU.

Incursions are really the only way to bring the established mutant characters to the MCU, as they will have to come from some other universe, like the Fantastic Four, as this is the only way to explain why X-Men never join the fight against Thanos and other threats. This is also a good reason why Kamala Khan is being teased as having a massive future in the MCU – as the MCU’s most important native mutant.
