‘Agatha All Along’ recently concluded its 9-episode run with 2 finale episodes. While many of the secrets and mysteries have been resolved, not all of them have been answered in a straightforward way.
For example, we have no idea why Agatha continued killing the witches after her son passed, we have no idea who Nicholas’ father is and the exact details of her deal with Rio. I suppose Jac Schaeffer will eventually explain those, or these mysteries are being saved for future projects in the MCU.
In any case, one mystery is related to Darkhold. The Darkhold, also called the Book of Sins, the Book of Spells, or the Book of the Damned, was a magical book filled with dark spells copied from ancient carvings made by Chthon. Only two copies of the Darkhold have appeared in recent times.
The book has appeared in ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ and in the MCU and its relationship with canon is widely problematic. Currently, Wanda destroyed every single copy of Darkhold in existence when she collapsed the castle on top of herself.
However, before Wanda had the Darkhold, Agatha was the owner of the cursed book and we were wondering whether ‘Agatha All Along’ would answer how exactly Agatha got the possession of the book.
In the first few episodes, the show heavily implied that Agatha traded her own son for Darkhold. This rumor was mentioned by Jennifer Kale. The evidence to support this was the vision in episode 3 when Agatha hears a baby crying in the crib, but once she approaches the crib you can see that Darkhold is lying in it instead of a living, breathing baby.
Episode 9 revealed that Agatha didn’t trade Nicholas in for Darkhold, instead, she made a deal with Death to save him after the child was supposed to be stillborn and die either during or soon after the birth.
Based on everything we know, there are two possible theories. First, Agatha already had access to Darkhold when she gave birth to Nicky, and she presumably made a deal with Mephisto to acquire it prior to her son’s birth.
Second, it’s possible that Agatha got Darkhold AFTER Nicky was already dead. It’s possible that Agatha sought Darkhold so she could revive her own son – a noble purpose similar to the one that led the Scarlet Witch to go insane and start studying the book.
In any case, whatever purpose Agatha planned to use the book for, it clearly did nothing except make Agatha more bitter and evil along the line. Clearly, she had enough juice to be a serious threat even without the book, but we can never underestimate Agatha’s thirst for power.
