How Many Spider-Men Can We Expect to Appear in ‘Spider-Man 4’?

As you’re likely aware, Sony holds the rights to Spider-Man, making him the only MCU character with a distinct out-of-universe storyline that impacts his role in the MCU. Consequently, the early Spider-Man films (specifically, Andrew Garfield’s installments) were independent of any MCU connections. However, with Tom Holland taking on the role, Sony and Marvel collaborated on three films featuring him.

In the final film of this trilogy, Spider-Man: No Way Home, both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returned as Spider-Man, joining Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in a multiverse storyline that also brought back several of their previous villains. The film was a tremendous hit, and fans are eagerly hoping for more stories like this in the future.

This report will delve into the latest rumors and information regarding Spider-Man 4, exploring the possibility of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield making a return in the upcoming installment.

As you might know, Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of Shang-Chi, has been confirmed to helm Spider-Man 4, with production rumored to kick off early next year. Given the cliffhanger ending of No Way Home, Peter Parker finds himself in a tough spot, and it will be interesting to see how Marvel addresses his situation moving forward.

However, regardless of how Tom Holland’s Spider-Man evolves, fans are buzzing about the potential return of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. Although neither is currently part of the MCU, Spider-Man 4 is expected to feature another multiversal storyline, leading many to speculate that at least one of them might make a return.

One theory is that if Spider-Man 4 is released in 2026 and takes place after the events of Doomsday, Marvel could bring back both Maguire and Garfield. This scenario makes sense if Doctor Doom, as suggested by the comic book storyline, sends the heroes to Battleworld after Doomsday.

While Marvel’s plans remain unclear, there’s a strong case for Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man to return. His character still has unresolved storylines and internal struggles. A film where Holland’s and Garfield’s Spider-Men team up under challenging circumstances could be a great way to explore their dynamic, potentially developing a mentor-student relationship akin to what we’ve seen in the Spider-Verse films and video games. Garfield himself recently shared his thoughts on the matter:

“I think it’s kind of endless, what can be done with that character. Not that we should; not that we will, but I think you can always find another story to tell.”

Tobey Maguire has already completed his Spider-Man storyline. While we’d love to see him return, we believe that Marvel and Sony should focus on Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man for the fourth film.
