As one of the few individuals to have ever wielded the power of the Phoenix Force, Namor the Sub-Mariner is one of the most formidable and enigmatic characters in the Marvel Universe. As the king of Atlantis and a powerful mutant in his own right, Namor has long been a force to be reckoned with. But when he becomes the host of the all-consuming Phoenix Force, his powers and abilities are taken to a whole new level. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at Phoenix Force Namor and explore just how powerful he truly is. From his unique abilities to his impact on the Marvel Universe, we’ll break down everything you need to know about this fascinating and complex character.

Who is Phoenix Force Namor & How is he connected to Phoenix Five?

During the epic Avengers vs. X-Men crossover event, the Earth is faced with a formidable and destructive force, the Phoenix Force. The Phoenix Force is an elusive and powerful entity in the Marvel Comics universe, often characterized as a cosmic force that represents creation and destruction and possesses the ability to reshape the universe itself. It is most commonly associated with mutants, particularly Jean Grey, and has been a central element of some of the most significant storylines in Marvel Comics, such as the Dark Phoenix Saga.

The Phoenix Force typically chooses a host or multiple hosts to wield its powers. In the Avengers vs. X-Men storyline, Iron Man’s attempt to destroy the Phoenix Force resulted in its splitting into five parts, each of which selected a different host. The Phoenix Five was formed, consisting of Cyclops, Colossus, Magik, Emma Frost, and Namor.

Initially, the Phoenix Five utilized their newfound powers for the greater good, providing free and clean energy and food supplies and putting an end to armed conflicts around the world. However, the Avengers recognized the potential danger of the Phoenix Force’s power, which grows stronger with each host. They predicted that the Phoenix Five would become harder to stop, and a confrontation ensued.

During the conflict, the Avengers managed to provoke the Phoenix Five, leading Namor to attack Wakanda. However, the Phoenix Force abandoned Namor during the attack, leaving him significantly less powerful than before. The other members of the Phoenix Five, Cyclops, Colossus, Emma Frost, and Magik, received a greater portion of the Phoenix Force’s power.

While Namor was merged with the Phoenix Force, he was virtually unstoppable, with enhanced strength, durability, and powers. This post will further explore Namor’s powers and abilities during his time as a Phoenix Force host.

Phoenix Force Namor: powers and abilities explained

Acting as a host of Phoenix Force, Namor’s abilities were greatly expanded when compared to his usual abilities. This led him to become capable of interstellar travel, pyrokinesis, life manipulation, immortality, and nearly infinite strength.

As Phoenix Force, Namor could fly at much faster speeds

In his standard form, we know that Namor can fly due to vestigial wings on his ankles and is also one of the fastest swimmers in the Marvel Universe. However, when he was empowered by the Phoenix Force, he gained the ability to fly at speeds massively faster than the speed of light. This extraordinary ability allowed him to traverse cosmic distances in a pure vacuum in a matter of moments.

He was immortal and extremely durable

Namor was already extremely difficult to kill prior to being empowered by the Phoenix Force. However, as a member of the Phoenix Five, he became quite literally immortal. This is because the Phoenix Force’s hosts generally do not age, and even if they are damaged in some way, the Phoenix Force, as it is related to the creation force, can easily bring them back to life. Dealing with a being that possesses such incredible power makes it especially difficult to overcome them.

Furthermore, Namor’s enhanced invincibility as a host of the Phoenix Force made him an even more formidable opponent. While empowered, he was able to regenerate from almost any injury, including those that would have been fatal to most other beings, in addition to his enhanced healing abilities. Phoenix Force also granted its hosts the powers of resurrection, making bringing almost anyone back to life possible.

Namor could control flames

Water is Namor’s domain. He is able to utilize his hydrokinetic abilities to manipulate large quantities of water, creating artificial floods or draughts. Empowered by Phoenix Force, he gained control over one additional element, fire, the cosmic kind. Cosmic fire is different from regular fire. It can burn without oxygen, and thus it’s capable of burning underwater. This makes Namor capable of causing great destruction as he is able to set the waters ablaze. Cosmic fire likewise manifested in the form of great fire wings.

Cosmic fire is among the hottest fires in the Marvel Universe, capable of burning through almost anything.

Phoenix Force Namor could manipulate molecules and time

Namor had access to molecular and temporal manipulation as a host of the cosmic force. This is, in large part, what allowed the Phoenix Five to provide the world with many resources since, with molecular manipulation, they could transform almost anything on a molecular level into something different. Likewise, temporal manipulation allowed them to affect the past to a limited extent, rewriting the events that have already come to pass.

His telepathy abilities were greatly improved

In one of our posts, we’ve covered that Namor can talk to fish and even control them to some extent. We’ve likewise mentioned that he can influence Atlanteans telepathically and perhaps even humans if he were to develop his powers accordingly. This is exactly what happened while he was empowered by Phoenix Force, as his powers reached cosmic levels. He could read, influence, and control the minds of others regardless of the distance between them.

And that’s about it. As you can see, Namor was a force to be reckoned with as a part of the Phoenix Five. His abilities were amplified to a near-godlike level. Further down the road, Namor had one more close encounter with the Phoenix Force, and he was able to be empowered by the cosmic force yet again. His powers were consequently once again lost as he was replaced by the Phoenix Force with Echo, who became the next host.
