MCU’s Phase 5 officially was officially kicked off with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and judging by what we’ve seen, it’s going to be the most exciting phase yet! MCU’s phase 5 will likewise continue soon with the release of Secret Wars, a live-action series set to be released sometime in early 2023. Not much is known about Secret Wars as of right now, except for the general plot outline and the cast of Marvel characters set to appear in the series. One of those characters is Abigail Brand, played by Emilia Clarke, and we’ve decided to use this opportunity to explore Abigail’s character in a bit more depth.

From her enigmatic origins to her impressive display of powers and abilities, Abigail Brand has captivated comic book fans for years. As a high-ranking member of the intelligence agency S.W.O.R.D., she has faced off against some of the most powerful beings in the cosmos and held her own. Let’s see Abigail Brand’s origin story and how powerful she is when compared to other MCU heroes.

Abigail Brand origin: From mutant alien to high S.W.O.R.D. agent

Abigail Thanriaguiaxus was born on the small extraterrestrial planet of Axus. Despite little being known about the planet, it is clear that her mother, a human, chose to settle there with Abigail’s father, a member of the planet’s native alien species. As a result, Abigail is a human-mutant-alien hybrid, with the X-gene inherited from her mother.

Despite the mystery surrounding her origin, Abigail’s life path led her to join S.H.I.E.L.D., specifically, the specialized sub-division called S.W.O.R.D. Her rapid ascent through the ranks of the department earned her the prestigious position of the commanding officer at the young age of 28, tasked with protecting Earth from extraterrestrial threats.

To reflect her unique mutant abilities, Abigail left her birth name behind and adopted the code “Brand.” With her new identity, she quickly became known as one of the most capable and respected individuals in her field.

Throughout her career, Abigail Brand inevitably crossed paths with Nick Fury. While she considered herself allied with him, she was often openly antagonistic toward him. This same tension extended to her relationship with her superior at the newly reformed Alpha Flight, Captain Marvel. Despite working together and remaining loyal to Carol Danvers, the two had a strained and, at times, hostile relationship.

Despite her contentious interactions with these individuals, Abigail’s dedication to her mission and her impressive abilities made her an invaluable member of any team. Her willingness to stand up for what she believed in, even if it meant clashing with authority figures, is a testament to her strength of character.

During the Secret Invasion storyline, Abigal Brand played a vital role in uncovering the hidden Skrull invasion.

Abigail Brand’s powers and abilities explained

As a pyrokinetic, Abigail Brand is capable of generating and manipulating flames to a limited extent. While she is unable to project fire beyond the reach of her arms, she can coat them entirely in flames, giving her a potent weapon in close combat situations.

Her flames are powerful enough to destroy most materials, including metals, and can severely injure human beings. However, as previously mentioned, her ability to project flames is limited to tactile contact only.

Despite these limitations, Abigail’s pyrokinesis is a formidable weapon in her arsenal. Her mastery over fire, combined with her strategic mind and impressive physical abilities, makes her a formidable opponent in any fight.

Abigail Brand’s incredible pyrokinetic abilities are not a result of her alien heritage, but rather the result of her mutant X-gene. Her mother, a carrier of the X-gene, passed down this unique ability to Abigail. As a mutant, Abigail eventually joined Krakoa, the mutant-only nation, where she could fully embrace and explore her powers alongside fellow mutants.

Abigail’s abilities, combined with her sharp and tactical mind, make her a powerful force to be reckoned with. Her ability to make split-second decisions in high-pressure situations has proven invaluable to her throughout her career. It’s no surprise that she quickly advanced through the ranks of S.W.O.R.D. to earn full command of the department by the age of 28.

She is also a highly skilled fighter, with exceptional hand-to-hand combat skills that she has honed through formal training in several armed and unarmed combat disciplines.

As a high-ranking S.W.O.R.D. official, Abigail was required to receive rigorous training in combat, giving her a competitive edge in any physical altercation. Her abilities were further improved after she joined the X-Men, where she had the opportunity to refine her pyrokinetic abilities and further develop her combat skills.

With her unique combination of pyrokinetic powers and physical abilities, Abigail is a force to be reckoned with in combat situations. She has demonstrated the ability to quickly adapt to new situations and to use her skills to their fullest potential, making her a formidable opponent for any adversary.

How strong is Abigail Brand?

Although Abigail Brand is a mutant, she doesn’t possess superhuman strength. Abigail Brand’s strength levels are within the normal range for a human, and she can lift her own body weight. Her speed is also limited to her human potential. However, her enhanced durability is quite impressive, and it’s not entirely clear whether it stems from her alien or mutant heritage. She has survived laser cannon blasts to the torso and walked away unscathed, suggesting that some sort of regenerative healing factor may be at play.

Despite not being the most powerful character in Marvel Comics, Abigail Brand has faced and stood up against many cosmic threats throughout her career with S.W.O.R.D., Alpha Flight, and the X-Men. Her impressive combat skills and ability to wield destructive fire make her quite formidable in her own right. What kind of powers and abilities will she have in the MCU’s Secret Invasion we’re yet to see, but it probably won’t stray much from the comic-book version of the character.
