Apart from the fact that it owns almost all the biggest movie franchises at this moment, one nice thing Disney is known about is that in its franchises, we can usually see some adorable non-human characters that usually give parents some headaches because which child wouldn’t want a toy based on one of those characters? We all still remember Mushu from Mulan, Sebastian from The Little Mermaid, and today we have Olaf from Frozen, Baby Yoda from The Mandalorian, and of course, Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy. Groot is a character we have seen in various sizes and ages, so in this article, we’ll try to explain Groot’s growth rate and provide an answer on how tall was he in all of his MCU appearances.
In the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, adult Groot’s height was 7’10” (2.39 meters), making him the team’s tallest member. After Groot has sacrificed himself to save the team, his best friend Rocket plants a part of his destroyed body to birth a new Groot, who’s been only 10.25″ (26 centimeters) tall at the time. When he appeared in Avengers: Infinity War, he grew into a teenage Groot, who was 5’44” (1.63 meters) tall. Groot didn’t survive Thanos’ snap in Infinity War, so he was at the same age and height when he returned five years later in Avengers: Endgame. In The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and the trailer for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Groot is evidently taller than he was in Infinity War and Endgame, but still not even close to his height from the first Guardians movie.
Groot is a fan-favorite character that started as a full-grown adult, and at the end of his debut movie, he was reborn as a twig again. During the next few MCU appearances, he has grown much faster than any regular human or a tree. He was Baby Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which takes place in 2014, shortly after the first movie, and by the time he appeared in Avengers: Infinity War, which takes place four years later, he was already a teenager. So, in the next few paragraphs, we’ll look into the numbers and try to explain Groot’s growth rate.
Groot’s growth rate between his MCU appearances
To calculate Groot’s approximate growth rate, we need to look at how tall Groot was during the two periods to determine how fast he grew between those periods. That’s why it’s important to know the timeline of his MCU appearances. Groot first appeared in the original Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which takes place in 2014, the same year the movie was released. Groot was already a grown-up in that movie, at the height of 7’10” (2.39 meters). It’s hard to say the maximum height that Groot can theoretically reach, but according to Marvel’s official page, he could reach 23 feet (7 meters) at his full height, at least in the comics. That’s roughly three times taller than adult Groot in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
After Groot has sacrificed himself, Rocket plants a part of the deceased Groot’s body so that a new Groot can be born. When we saw this new Groot at the end of the first movie, he couldn’t have been taller than 6 inches (15.24 centimeters). The sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, introduced fan-favorite Baby Groot. Although it was released in 2017, Vol. 2 occurs only three months after the first movie’s events. That would mean Groot has grown 4.25 inches (10.7 centimeters) in three months, making him 70.6% taller in Vol. 2 than he was at the end of the first movie.
The next MCU appearance for Groot was in Avengers: Infinity War, which takes place four years after the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Although he was technically four years old in Infinity War, he was already called teenage Groot at the time. In Infinity War, Groot was 5’44” (1.63 meters) tall, making him 526.92% taller than in Vol 2. Groot didn’t survive Thanos’ snap, so when he returned five years later, he remained at the same age and same height as he was in Infinity War, but it’s hard to say how tall he would be if he had lived for those five years.
Groot appeared in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special last year, and his next, and presumably last, MCU appearance will be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 this May. In the Holiday Special and the trailer for Vol. 3, we can see now that Groot is already the team’s tallest member again, although still not as tall as he was when he first appeared in the MCU. The Holiday Special showed us that he was already a head taller than Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord, who is 6’2″ (1.88 meters) tall, so having that in mind, we can say that Groot in The Holiday Special was around 6′7″ (2 meters), which makes him 22.69% taller than he was in Infinity War and Endgame.
While there’s no official telling when Vol. 3 takes place in the MCU timeline, what is known is that it definitely takes place after Thor: Love and Thunder, which is set in 2024, and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which is set in December 2025. So, having that in mind, we could say that Groot has grown by 22.69% between his fourth and, excluding that five-year time jump, the sixth year of age.
