Hugh Jackman has been playing Wolverine for 24 years up to this point, and it’s hard to imagine anybody else taking on the mantle. Jackman still has it, he proved as much during his latest appearance in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and even though Reynolds joked that Disney is going to make Jackman be Wolverine until he is 90, we know that this is not feasible and since a new generation of mutants is coming to the MCU, fans are likely in for a replacement.

Over the years numerous actors have been put forward as potential replacements but, Jackman himself put forward one name several years ago.

During the press tour for Pan, Hugh Jackman mentioned to MTV UK that if 20th Century Fox were to recast Wolverine after his retirement following Logan (2017), he would choose English actor Tom Hardy as his successor. Jackman believed Hardy would be an excellent choice but wanted to ensure his replacement wasn’t too easily decided.

That’s a great question I haven’t really given a lot of thought. I’ve been asked the question a lot and I’m always like “[I don’t want to] make it too easy on the studio to replace me” but I’ve still got one more to do you know, I’m sure they’re already talking about it that some actor is out there “Keep it quiet but we want you next.” He’s younger than me for sure. Then Tom Hardy could be a great [replacement].

Tom Hardy would definitely be an interesting choice, but there’s a slight problem with this replacement as Hardy already has a character in the MCU. With the release of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Venom was briefly in the MCU, which means that this casting can’t exactly happen unless you employ the Multiverse cheat which allows actors to return as several characters in the same continuity – the most recent example of it being Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom.

Fans have frequently also mentioned Cavill in the context of playing Wolverine, and the actor appeared briefly in the role as one of the showcased variants – Cavillerine.
