IDW Is Launching Three New Star Trek Limited Comic Series Later This Year

IDW, a key publisher of Star Trek comics since 2007, is set to release three new limited series in 2025. These stories will feature fresh adventures for fans, starting with a tale about the often-overlooked red-shirted crew members, followed by explorations with the Strange New Worlds team, and ending with a final mission for the Voyager crew.

The first series, launching in July, is a five-issue story called STAR TREK: RED SHIRTS. Written by Christopher Cantwell and drawn by Megan Levens, it focuses on a group of Security officers from the U.S.S. Warren.

This team, led by a seasoned officer, lands on the icy planet Arkonia 89 to stop spies from stealing Starfleet secrets. The crew faces harsh weather, dangerous wildlife, and hidden enemies. No one knows who will make it out alive.

Cantwell describes the series as a tribute to the red shirts, saying, “STAR TREK: RED SHIRTS is in honor of the nameless vaporized, incinerated, and otherwise blown apart, where they’re the main characters of a STAR TREK-style suicide mission unlike any other.” He adds, “We will get to know these Ensigns and Lieutenants intimately before they are likewise crushed, disrupter’d, and sucked into space.” Levens shares her excitement, noting, “STAR TREK: RED SHIRTS is a dream project for me, offering the opportunity to draw an entirely new cast of Starfleet officers and then to kill them off in delightfully horrific ways!

The U.S.S. Warren crew includes Ensign Zayna Raad, a 27-year-old kickboxing champion from Lebanon; Lt. Midge DeMatrio, a 40-year-old Klingon War veteran and Chief Security Officer; Lt. Webster Cromarty, a 46-year-old survivalist with years of service; and Ensign Chip Miller, a 23-year-old rookie with a peanut allergy and poor combat skills.

Next up, in August, comes STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS – THE SEEDS OF DESTRUCTION. This five-issue series, written by Robbie Thompson and illustrated by Travis Mercer, follows the Enterprise crew as they investigate an ice-covered planet hiding dark secrets below its surface.

Familiar faces like Una Chin-Riley, La’An Noonien-Singh, Spock, and Christine Chapel join a new robot companion, D6, in this chilling adventure.

Thompson, a longtime Star Trek fan, says, “As a lifelong fan of Star Trek (TOS forever!), I was absolutely thrilled to get the call from editor extraordinaire Heather Antos to pitch on a Strange New Worlds miniseries.”

He adds, “We’re taking the SNW crew to one of the scariest and coldest corners of the universe, and I can’t wait for Trek fans everywhere to see the cosmic horrors we’ve cooked up!” Mercer agrees, stating, “After reading what Robbie has in store for the Enterprise crew, there was no way I was going to pass up this opportunity!

The third series, STAR TREK: VOYAGER – HOMECOMING, begins in September. Co-written by Tilly and Susan Bridges with art by Angel Hernandez, this five-issue story marks the 30th anniversary of the Voyager TV series.

It starts right after the show’s final moment, when the ship neared Earth. Now, Captain Janeway and her crew face one last emergency before they can truly return home.

The Bridges duo shares their enthusiasm: “We’re so incredibly excited to be writing STAR TREK: VOYAGER – HOMECOMING. As lifelong Trekkies, we’re delighted to be part of Voyager’s 30th anniversary celebration.

We can’t wait to give Janeway and crew one last adventure… will everything go smoothly? Well, this is Voyager… who’s to say (we are, but we’re not gonna spoil it, where’s the fun in that?).” Hernandez adds, “I’m sure this is going to be one of those special moments that will be part of the wonderful history of Voyager, and it is an honor for me to be part of it.

These new comics follow STAR TREK: OMEGA, a one-shot comic out on June 18, wrapping up earlier IDW Star Trek stories.

Heather Antos, IDW’s group editor, sums it up: “As the age-old saying goes, ‘When two comic series end, three more begin!’ From celebrating nostalgia with the fan-favorite crew of Voyager, to going boldly to the fearsome depths of a Lovecraftian planet in Strange New Worlds, to taking a decades-long question of ‘if the color of a uniform makes a man’ and spinning it on its head… we’re showing that IDW is not yet done producing the very best STAR TREK comics possible.
