IGN Readers Vote That Casting RDJ as Dr. Doom Was the Wrong Move for the MCU

This year’s SDCC was full of surprises related to several upcoming MCU projects. Hall H attendees had an exclusive opportunity to check out footage from ‘Thunderbolts*,’ ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ and footage with some new scenes from ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ which hints that adamantium will soon be introduced to the MCU.

However, the biggest announcement of the night was definitely the fact that ‘Avengers: Kangy Dynasty’ is being retitled ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and that Robert Downey Jr. is back in the MCU, this time playing the role of Doctor Doom.

It’s clear that the motivation behind the decision was to erase Kang as soon as possible and the character’s connection with Jonathan Majors. Majors, who had a deal to star in several MCU projects as Thanos’ successor as the premiere villain in the MCU was nearly half a year ago found guilty and convicted of assault. The case was high-profile and Majors almost completely derailed his career in the ordeal.

The fans have been petitioning to have him reinstated in the MCU, but Disney likely doesn’t want anything to do with convicted actor, and it’s obvious that they needed a big name to distract the fans as the storyline slowly shifts from Kang to Doctor Doom.

Following the announcement, the reactions were not all that favorable. Of course, everyone is excited to see both RDJ and Doom in the MCU, but a large number of fans are disappointed that the actor is playing the popular villain, since objectively, fans have pitched on social media far better actors for the role.

There are several concerns at play here. First, fans think that this is a pure fan-service move since fans have been asking for RDJ to return for quite some time. Second, there are concerns that the story will be rushed considering that Kang was being set up as the ultimate villain.

Last, there are concerns that Feige will undo the most emotional moment in the MCU so far, the fact that Iron Man sacrificed himself to save the universe from Thanos. A small minority of fans are also complaining online that Doom’s character is being whitewashed since Doom is in the source of material Romani character. There’s also that group of Kang supporters who really wanted to see Kang’s story play out.

No matter which matter you decide to focus on, there are a lot of problems with this casting, and I personally have to agree that someone else might have been a better fit, but it is what it is.

Now back to the topic of the article, IGN recently conducted a short survey asking fans to express their opinion on the matter. Considering IGN’s popularity they have a really large pool of fans to give their opinion.

The popular website states that 163,152 fans across all of their social media accounts voted and the results are in, majority of fans don’t like the idea Rober Downey Jr. is playing Doctor Doom.

The results are specifically 43.6% in favor and 56.4% against it. This is not such a small difference, considering the number of fans.

Ironically, most comments in the post are receiving RDJ’s casting as a positive thing. What do you think about it? Let us know in the comments below!
