Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel was only recently introduced to the MCU but she is already the star of her own standalone show and was a vital part of the ‘The Marvels.’ It seems that Ms. Marvel will be a massive part of the MCU going forward since the project focusing on Young Avengers, her own initiative in the MCU, is in active development.

Ms. Marvel will obviously be a part of the team down the road, but speaking to ComicBook.com she expressed something altogether different when asked which team she would like to join within the cinematic universe:

On the big screen? X-Men. I don’t think that’s a bad answer. I think the X-Men is so cool, and it really just marks her as a legitimate mutant and all the naysayers can no longer say nay,

Her comment is a reference to some upset fans who are refusing to accept that Ms. Marvel is a mutant now. The character was originally introduced as an Inhuman, but her origin show in the MCU revealed that her powers are here due to a specific genetic mutation, making her MCU’s first confirmed mutant. The changes to her character did not stop here, in the comics, Ms. Marvel was killed and resurrected as a mutant which sparked further debate on whether the MCU should have that much influence on the comics. When asked whether she believes that she could act as the gateway character for the younger audiences, Vellani admitted that this is up to the fans to decide:

I never thought about that. Because I still have my own X-Men characters that I look back to, and I think those books are so timeless in a way. I was just reading Grant Morrison’s run and Chris Claremont, which Chris Claremont’s a little edgy sometimes, but the Grant Morrison stuff is like… I can read it a million times. I think it totally works. But it is cool for people to kind of accept her as a mutant now. And I don’t know if people are actually looking to her as the literal new mutant and this is the new generation. But yeah, I don’t think that’s for me to say. I think the audience will take these two miniseries that I’ve done, and hopefully they’re happy with the results.
