Disney’s latest Star Wars project, The Acolyte, has stirred significant controversy since its debut, marked by numerous incidents and major review-bombing. This series faced more backlash than any previous Star Wars project, ultimately concluding after just eight episodes.

Fans were hopeful for a second season, but it has now been confirmed that Lucasfilm will not be renewing The Acolyte. This decision has sparked new debates, with some welcoming the end while others are disappointed.

Despite the mixed reactions to the series’ conclusion, an insider suggests that the decision to cancel The Acolyte came quite suddenly. Lucasfilm had been planning to continue the series up until recently, and it had even received a tentative “green light.” So, what changed?

Before we proceed, it’s important to note that what follows is based on a rumor from an insider claiming to have Disney sources. These sources remain unnamed, and the information provided should be taken with caution as it is not official.

Now, on to the update. As previously mentioned, Lucasfilm has decided to cancel The Acolyte, and a second season will not be produced. Despite many believing this outcome was inevitable, Lucasfilm had not publicly confirmed it, and prior reports suggested a second season was in the works. If you think this seems far-fetched, consider the following tweet:

BREAKING: According to my sources at Disney and Lucasfilm, the studio was IN FACT putting together a Season 2 writers room for #TheAcolyte back in February with Leslye Headland. AND had been quietly inquiring about the interest level and availability of directors for a Season 2 as recently as last month. The show definitely had a “soft” green light to continue. Oh and Disney’s internal language currently describes the show as “cancelled” despite what they’re saying publicly. So yeah, it was cancelled.

As mentioned, the veracity of this information is uncertain, but it aligns with the reports we’ve shared in recent weeks, so it wouldn’t be surprising if it proves to be accurate. We still don’t know the exact reasons behind the decision, as neither Disney nor Lucasfilm have provided an official explanation. However, factors such as low viewership and Disney’s assessment of the series’ performance at the recent D23 event might have influenced Lucasfilm’s choice to cancel the show.
