Is Marvel Doing Justice to Its Black Characters?

Share:

While the MCU appears to be recovering, some believe it faces deeper issues beyond financial challenges. One of these concerns is the treatment of Black characters. A fan recently highlighted this on The Master Plan, questioning whether Marvel is truly doing enough to properly represent its Black characters, despite the surface-level appearance of empowerment and diversity.

Before we begin, it’s important to note that the views expressed here are solely those of one fan and do not represent the opinions of our writers and editors. Additionally, X has flagged the account “Marvel Updates” for spreading misinformation and making unfounded claims. With that disclaimer, let’s take a look at the tweet in question:

X explicitly states that there is no credible source claiming that ‘Armor Wars’ is being canceled, and fans are advised to take such tweets with skepticism. However, the previous points are accurate.

It is true that T’Challa is the only major MCU character not recast, and the second Black Panther film struggled to find a suitable replacement, leading fans to advocate for a new actor to honor Boseman’s legacy.

The issues surrounding the upcoming Blade movie are factual, but we wouldn’t attribute them to racism. We have covered the reasons for the delays in several reports on Comic Basics, and they are unrelated to the character’s race.

Regarding the canceled Photon series, it was likely terminated due to Marvel’s ongoing financial difficulties. Monica Rambeau, though a compelling character, is not a mainstream one, and Marvel’s financial troubles likely influenced the cancellation rather than personal reasons.

Overall, we don’t believe Marvel has a problematic relationship with Black characters. This group, along with others, is represented and treated with respect. There are currently no signs of systemic issues.
