When it comes to Marvel’s TV series, WandaVision holds a special place in history as the first official MCU show—and arguably one of the best to date.
A brilliant and deeply emotional continuation of Wanda Maximoff’s journey, the series showcased the immense power and pain of the Scarlet Witch while subtly setting the stage for her darker turn in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Praised by critics and beloved by fans, WandaVision dominated conversations at the height of its release, becoming a cultural phenomenon that left a lasting legacy. Even now, it remains a hot topic of discussion among MCU enthusiasts.
Back when the series was airing, rumors circulated about a secret tenth episode. Although the show concluded after nine episodes, speculation lingered that a tenth had been planned but never released. At the time, nothing was confirmed, and the buzz eventually faded—until now. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer has finally revealed the truth!
WandaVision debuted on January 15, 2021, marking a milestone as the first official Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) show. While there had been Marvel series before, they were not officially tied to the MCU canon.
The series starred Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff and Paul Bettany as Vision, with Kathryn Hahn introduced as the unforgettable Agatha Harkness—who would later get her own spinoff. The story explored Wanda’s profound grief, showing how her powers allowed her to “kidnap” an entire town and construct a false reality where Vision was alive, and they shared an idyllic family life.
The show concluded on March 5, 2021, after nine episodes, but rumors swirled at the time about a secret tenth episode. Speculation ranged from claims that the episode had been filmed and shelved to theories that it was scrapped during production. While these rumors captured fans’ imaginations, no concrete evidence ever surfaced—until now.
Three years later, showrunner Jac Schaeffer has finally confirmed that a tenth episode was indeed planned but was ultimately scrapped, and its elements folded into the series finale. Here’s what she revealed:
‘WandaVision’ was originally 10 [episodes], then, for logistical, budget, and creative reasons, we combined two episodes. Then moving into [Agatha] I wanted it to have the same surface area and real estate as ‘WandaVision,’ so yeah it was always nine.
This aligns with what series director Matt Shankman—also known for his work on Fantastic Four: First Steps—revealed three years ago, which initially sparked the rumors at the time:
Well, yeah, things were constantly changing and getting rebroken. The story was changing, especially a lot of the real-world stuff and the finale. There was a lot of experimentation going on and sort of trying different things out. We also at one point had 10 episodes planned and we ended up collapsing a couple, you know just to make the rhythm feel a little bit better.
WandaVision evolved significantly over time, and Schaeffer even revealed that Doctor Strange was originally intended to appear in the series’ post-credits scene—but the plan ultimately didn’t come to fruition:
Initially, Doctor Strange was going to appear in the tag for ‘WandaVision.’ It’s Wanda sitting on the porch of that cabin, and she’s rocking peacefully. And you know how Strange can do those circles around someone, and make them go somewhere? The circle starts around her, like she’s going to be teleported somewhere, and she stops it, so Strange has to show up in person.
I just loved that so much, that Wanda would be like, ‘No, I’m not going to go where you want to teleport me. You’re going to have to come to my door.’ It was a good one, but another tag took its place.
