James Gunn Breaks Silence on Rumors of a Mr. Freeze Spin-Off at DC Studios

While Gunn is busy kickstarting a new and overhauled cinematic universe based on DC characters, Reeves’ is also busy building his Epic Crime Saga based on the 2022 ‘The Batman.’

‘The Batman’ was intended to launch a new Batman film trilogy and establish a separate Batman-focused shared universe, known as the “Batman Epic Crime Saga.” Key cast members signed on for future films by 2019. Both Robert Pattinson and director Matt Reeves originally expressed interest in introducing characters like Robin and villains such as the Court of Owls, Mr. Freeze, and Hush in future films.

A sequel, ‘The Batman – Part II,’ was announced in 2022, with Pattinson and Reeves returning, and is set to release in October 2026 after a delay.

The first spinoff TV show focusing on Oz Cobb, ‘The Penguin’ is currently going through its first season with overwhelmingly positive criticism and fan response. Since Reeves recently announced that one more spinoff is in development, rumors also started making rounds that a project focusing on Mr. Freeze is also in development, most likely a movie.

The rumors came from Production Weekly, but considering their somewhat gray track record when it comes to productions, there really isn’t any strong indication that this is true.

Reeves did hint that ‘The Batman Part II’ will have a winter setting, but he also hinted that he will try to distance himself from fantastical villains, and the most likely candidate for the Batman sequel is Court of Owls.

Now James Gunn often debunks rumors online, using his private social media, and as soon as he was asked by a fan whether the movie is in development he seemingly debunked it.

I haven’t heard that one but there are a lot of rumors out there this week. Some of them are true, some are partially true, and some aren’t true at all. If it’s fun for you to follow the unknowns, follow them, but don’t trust anything completely until you hear it from me or Peter (who is not online despite me seeing him tagged in stuff.)

Considering that Gunn did not specifically mention the Mr. Freeze project, fans still thought that he was avoiding answering the direct question, but he did address it later and debunked it completely:

And you’ve heard it from the man himself. Mr. Freeze is one of the most popular Batman villains, but the project is yet not in development, that doesn’t however rule out any future development.
