After major commercial disappointments with Black Adam and Shazam: Fury of the Gods, Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios need a win with the next DC movie, The Flash. Not a small win, but bigger than the “Marvel Studios with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” kind of win. Even though DC Extended Universe will conclude this year with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom before DCU takes over, co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn is using every chance he can get to hype Ezra Miller-led movie up.
The Flash movie was initially announced in 2014. Ezra Miller debuted as Barry Allen/The Flash in 2016’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and he reprised the role in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, 2017’s Justice League (including 2021’s director’s cut Zack Snyder’s Justice League) and the season finale of the Peacemaker series. However, The Flash movie was in development hell for a long time before Andy Muschietti was hired to direct the movie from a screenplay by Christina Hodson.
DC Studios’ co-CEO calls The Flash his favorite movie of the year!
James Gunn is one of the most known names among the superhero genre fans. His latest movie, Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is now playing in theaters and has grossed $660 million. While Gunn is developing his next movie — Superman: Legacy, which will also kick off DCU on the big screen, Gunn is still using all of his influence on social media to promote The Flash.
Gunn usually likes to have quick conversations with his fans on Twitter, and today one of his followers asked him what’s been his favorite movie of 2023 so far. Gunn replied with a short answer: The Flash. The movie was first presented at CinemaCon last month, and early screenings also started. Some celebrities like Stephen King and Tom Cruise also stated they already watched the movie and they had nothing but words of praise for it.
Additionally, one Twitter user asked Gunn to pick between The Flash and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Gunn answered: “I can’t judge my own film. It’s like my child. It’s a different kind of love.”
One more interesting thing, Gunn was also asked if the upcoming DCU will be a shared universe with one big story as DC Animated Movie Universe or if it will focus more on individual projects. Gunn replied that we should expect both; individual stories and larger stories over multiple projects.
Constant changing in DC Extended Universe’s course made The Flash a very hard movie to develop, but now we finally know that The Flash will be a huge Multiversal ride with Ezra Miller in a dual role, Sasha Calle, who is debuting as Supergirl, and Michael Keaton, who returns to the role of Batman for the first time after more than 30 years.
Ben Affleck will also reprise the role of DCEU’s Batman for one last time. The movie is loosely based on the Flashpoint storyline in which Barry Allen uses his superspeed to travel back in time to save his deceased mother, but accidentally he creates an alternate timeline he’ll need to save with his new allies.
Written by Christina Hodson and directed by Andy Muschietti, The Flash will open in theaters worldwide on June 16, 2023.
